Indie Devs Are NOT Happy With This Unity Decision!

This is definitely going to cause a massive exodus from the engine.

  1. I use Unity but I've never published a game to Steam. I don't see these changes affecting me in any way. People tend to overreact so I'm skeptical it's as bad as they say. Though, that is a big jump in yearly cost for licensing. For someone like me who is a hobbyist, at best, I'd never pay $2,000 a year for something I'm making zero money on.

I think what'll happen is people will try to find ways around it, like selling the game for free on Steam but have a patreon or something like that. Or like on Itch IO, you can have it set up to accept donations instead of charge a price.

  2. I wish people weren't pussies.. just transition to a different engine and let them know any current game will be the last iteration in unity

fuck them… instead of updating the engine they are sitting around thinking of how to charge more money for a product devs already pay for

devs are so stupid they won't just leave they'll just stay and remain a slave despite complaining

  3. Forget buying digital games and sharing them amongst family members in a household anymore. I feel like that thought process is one of the main reasons they are going to be charging developers and subsequently inflating prices that directly impact the end user (customers of the games).

  4. Some Comments from Indie Devs that i've seen:

Crema (Temtem): They are working on a new project which still uses Unity and Temtem still use Unity but any titles beyond that won't use Unity
Innersloth (Among Us): If this goes through, we'll have to delay bring in features that people want to see
Rob (Clive n Wrench): Game is out now, Please buy but Don't Install
AggroCrab (AC Games): Due to coming on Xbox Game Pass in 2024, if even a portion of the 25M Subs install this game, it can cut into our income and threatens the businesses future
Ova Magica: A lot of criticism towards Unity (But Rightfully Warranted)

Also a Cheap Plug for Godot Engine which is Open Source and the Engine that Cassette Beasts uses. I've heard it can struggle with 3D games but better than the current situation of Unity

  5. Damn, Nexomon might actually get more expensive. Nexomon Extinction sold at least 125,000 copies and each copy was $20. In conjunction with Nexomon mobile versions, Nexomon 3 upon release will qualify for this. 😢

  6. The top brass at Unity sold their stocks prior to pulling this crap. Not only that, but they're partnering up with an Israeli company that is KNOWN for installing malicious background processes that keep track of everything on your computer and what you do. I want to support devs that make good products, but I am not touching Unity games once this goes into effect. Game devs, pick a new engine. It's not too late. You'll be doing yourselves AND your customers a service by making games on a different engine.

  7. couldnt i kill an indie dev by getting a group of people to uninstall then install then uninstall for several hours this policy is a direct attack on indie game development. HOW MUCH DID THE AAA COMPANYS PAY UNITY TO DO THIS

  8. I can see this not going through once the bigger publisher’s lawyers get involved. However, this is poop. Gonna see games pulled, switch engines and the like. Unreal should capitalize on this hardcore.

  9. People can install bots to uninstall and reinstall games over and over again 24/7. That is just one of many ways this can be abused to hurt developers and publishers. I smell a barrage of lawsuits coming up very soon. I don't even think major developers and publishers will put up with this.

  10. Oh. My. God…

I know some of you don't pay attention to TTRPG, but the Unity Install fee is so scummy that it reminds me of the Open Game License outrage regarding Dungeons and Dragons earlier this year.

Basically, Wizards of the Coast was demanding a 24% Royalty cut of money you got in revenue or that you raise in something like Kickstarter , just so you may sell something that uses the Dungeons and Dragons IP. They also were saying, "You had a unique thing for the game you're selling? Well, it's our idea now, and you'll not be getting any credit or money for it if we use it."

The ENTIRE community revolted via protests and refusing to purchase it. This resulted in WotC to backtrack and scrap the plans completely.

This actually would have affected Baldur's Gate 3 if it stood. Profits, at least.

I glossed over other details admittedly, but I wonder if History is repeating in a similar way.

Edit: I got a question Ed. Would that Install Fee apply to someone re-downloads a digital Unity Game they accidentally deleted?

  11. The Game Maker subscription is not amazing but it's very affordable for most people. This Unity trash is a decision made by a tiny group of executives at the top of the company, but it hurts all the hardworking people at Unity

  12. ngl with the way this is going devs will start all using custom engines… Like i get making money of your engine but shooting your customers in the foot like that is not gonna end well for them.
then again if roblox is anything to go off it might very well end up just becoming the norm.
the amount roblox takes is insane.

they already takes 30% from ANY robux transaction, including cashing out robux, but they take a massive cut off that too apparantly.

these platforms are getting greedy and it's either gonna end with everyone switching to a new one that's gonna take months to learn how to use but doesn't take most of your earnings
or this is gonna be the norm and the indie scene will probably die out cuz it's too expensive to risk it.

it's sad how game devs get treated. hell anything to do with making games or events around it is just getting worse and worse.
my local store is litterally trying to kill/make some games leave the store simply because they don't like the game (they don't even organize it or play themselves but they do stock it.

the treatment of the people working behind the scenes is just horrendous and needs to change

  13. If they keep this up and developers keep using unity this only screws the consumers bwcause the pricing for games will skyrocket now. Completely dumb decision, but thankfully most devs are immediately swapping engines before this goes into effect. I would too personally because even if they took it back they prove they can't be trusted now.

  14. Not to forget that if a game is moddable, people may accidently break it and need to reinstall it. Or if something goes wrong while installing the game, like a poweroutage or the pc crashing, it will probably count for two installments as well. Then there is the matter of limited space for games on pc's and one may uninstall a game to make room for another, then after a fee months or a year remember the first game and want to play it and install it again after removing another game to make space for it. This is a unreasonable model that needs to be boycotted very badly until it is made more reasonable.
