That’s the end of the opening day of the 1st Test between West Indies and India. A brilliant day of Test cricket for India as they bundle out the hosts for 150 despite losing the toss and go back in the hut without a dent adding 80 runs for the first wicket.

Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin combined to take eight wickets including the final two in the evening session to bundle out the hosts for 150 with the debutant Alick Athanaze top scoring with 47. Ashwin broke a few records to register his 33rd Test 5 wicket haul also passing the 700 wickets mark in international cricket.

After bundling out the Windies for 150 India’s latest opening pair Yashasvi Jaiswal (40*) and Rohit Sharma (30*) batted well to add 80 runs. There were a couple of close appeals and a review as well taken against Rohit Sharma but the umpire’s call which was initially not out saved the India skipper early in his innings. The game was also interrupted for 5 minutes due to rain but it didn’t impact much to the India openers.

Jaiswal took his time to get off the mark but did so in style playing an upper cut on his 16th delivery and did not look back hitting six fours enroute his unbeaten knock. Quick bowlers Jason Holder and Kemar Roach alongside Jomel Warrican kept things tight for India but the openers have brought the trail down to just 70 runs.

Session Breakdown of Day 1: Session 1: 28 Overs | 68 Runs | 4 Wickets Session 2: 30 Overs | 69 Runs | 4 Wickets Session 3: 29.3 Overs | 93 Runs | 2 Wickets. Stumps Day 1: IND- 80/0 (23 Overs) (Rohit 30 Jaiswal 40) trail West Indies by 70 runs. Jaiswal plays a reverse sweep for a boundary in the final over of the day. Innings break: WI 150 all out (64.3 Overs) (Athanaze 47 Brathwaite 20 Ashwin 5/60 Jadeja 3/26).

Ravichandran Ashwin: “Yeah I thought it was a pretty good performance. I think the pitch had a bit of moisture on it. As the morning session progressed it got a bit slower and started to spin. In the second session I had to adapt differently with the pitch slowing down. I had to adjust my pace accordingly. I am not surprised by the pitch. We practiced here in Dominica earlier and during my previous visits to West Indies I have learnt that the pitch is on the slower side.

The most important trait is to be an international cricketer. With so many limited-overs leagues across the world one tend to be carried away by its performances. But international cricket is about getting better every day. Jaiswal I mean you saw him reverse sweeping the first ball off the final over of the day. That is what we gonna get from him. He is pretty vibrant and we hope he goes far in his career. We shall give our best environment for him.”

After ripping off West Indies for partly score of 150 the Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal have played magnificently helping the team get past 50 without breaking much of a sweat. India are 54/0 in 13 overs and trail by just 96 runs. Rohit survived a lbw scare earlier as the umpire’s call saved the Indian skipper. Jaiswal took 16 balls to get off the mark but looked confident in his stay on the crease.

The bowlers of West Indies haven’t really hit their mark consistently giving away too many freebies for the visitors. With an hour’s play left in the day West Indies would ideally like a couple of wickets before stumps. With that six India get past 50. And the partnership between Jaiswal and Rohit for the opening wicket also crosses fifty. Half volley in the slot on the leg stump. Rohit gets on the front foot and helps it on the way. Lofts it in the leg side up and over midwicket and clears the fence!
