  1. Driving into Houston the Tesla depot was stacked every inch with new Teslas. I’ve never seen this before.

Gotta ask yourself if they really have every one presold?

Another indicator is the used car market. Used ICE cars, like Honda & Toyota, sit for way less time than used Teslas before selling.

    Price is definitely a factor.

  2. Here in the midwest (USA) the EV revolution has yet to appear. I might see a couple other Teslas in a half-hour drive across town, but a sighting of a MachE or a Rivian is very rare. And judging by the progress of FSD updates in my five-year-old Model 3, Robotaxis may appear around the same time Elon sets up a station on Mars.

  3. Sadly, it seems that spraying out multi-GRAM metal particles at American schoolchildren is likely to remain socially acceptable for some time to come. So we'll have to get back to you regarding the micro particles.

  4. 1. I plead Hydrogen powered ICE w/Toyota & Exxon joining together. Then there is the Porsche 'Synthetic Fuel' that they use for their racing. Scaled up, the prices should mimic Fossil Fuels.
    2. and this, what is happening to NEVs in China ! FYI,

I like Elon Musk, and even he has 'altered' his rant on Hydrogen.
Lithium, and the other needed metals will still impact on the rise of your EVs.
Your advocacy is understood but be real !

  5. I don't agree. People will still want a cheap local electric run-about with a restricted range (say 75 miles). For longer trips or a commute – ok – get a call-up car. The demise of ICE cars will come even quicker than you are proposing because filling stations are already on razor-thin margins and as business starts to drop, many will go out of business. ICE cars will get harder and harder to own and this will accelerate the switch to EV's.

  6. I think there will be a glut of gasoline soon causing prices to go down, way down, Before refineries and fuel pumps close. Then prices will sky rocket and gas range anxiety will set in.

  7. I think for longer trips, autonomous buses will be even cheaper than a robotaxi. I imagine someone going on a long trip will take a robotaxi to the bus station. The luxurious and roomy bus will probably have a dedicated lane on the highway where it can go faster than a car. At the end of the bus trip, there will be a robotaxi waiting for each passenger, or perhaps passengers will share a robotaxi if they are going to adjacent areas.

  8. "It will save 1,000's of lives … so of course your government is going to push for this …". Your Scandinavian accent betrays you – you live in a relatively true democracy and have literally NO CONCEPT of how CORRUPT THE US GOVERNMENT AT ALL LEVELS IS. (Both parties, although much more so the Republicans). The US government and especially the Republicans have already shown in multiple ways that they have no aversion to killing people – any people including their own citizens and certainly ANY non-Americans. Expecting them to do the right thing is as naive as Neville Chamberlain expecting Hitler to negotiate in good faith – or ANYONE expecting Donald Trump to negotiate in good faith.

  9. At first we will hear from Big Oil that their supply or some other lame excuse about oil production and therefore the price of gas will rise and their gas stations will start to disappear, keep an eye out for the local gas stations slowly closing one after the other, where you thought you could get gas will now start to look like it was for EV's looking for a place to charge. I think by the time that starts to happen that's when the avalanche of demand for an EV will be at it's greatest. It's a long term plan with Tesla, in 10 -20 years the landscape wont be recognizable.

  10. As Lars said, what most people do is what really matters (when assessing the effectiveness of the transition to sustainable energy). But the statement "nobody will even want to own a car" is obviously not true. To a lot of people the acts of owning, driving, customizing and maintaining their own vehicle are in and of themselves fun.

  11. Totally agree that EV's and autonomy will disrupt the auto industry and the economy. Not so positive on the short term impact of this disruption. Motor vehicles and parts are $1.5 trillion — 3% of the US GDP. ICE collapse pulls the plug on car production and watch cities and states collapse as millions of people assembling autos and making parts at supplier plants lose their jobs.

ICE collapse triggers the collapse of oil production, refining and related products are $4 trillion — 8% of US GDP. Pull the plug on that and there's no fertilizer for crops, no plastic for packaging, and no asphalt to pave roads. Nations collapse when you throw all these together. Transportation as a service won't mean anything if there's no food to eat or roads to drive on. Brother, can you spare a dime or $100 for a gallon of gas?

  12. The trend is clear; for whatever reasons, some lack rational justification, EV’s are the future. Many people of will say hooey to social requirements. I will be driving my 911 until I am unable to physically. Just try to stop me! Unfortunately that we have rapped EV’s with the irrational changes to our social structure including restricting personal freedom.

  13. I think most of your optimism is right. But I feel that it is not so clear whether transport as a service will be adopted as quickly as we might hope. People buy products, even if they could rent them.

  14. It's not just about cost savings. It's about privacy, independence, control and to transport whenever and however I want in whatever vehicle I want. Don't care what's "socially acceptable. " Do you buy the cheapest clothes to "save money?" Probably not. You buy what you like regardless of cost as long as you can afford it. Same goes with anything else including vehicles.

  15. You mean, no one will watch car videos in a decade from now…
Because no one would own a car…

Have you a plan B for that time?

Oh no, what will I do with that free time, no need to watch car videos. 😉

  16. Guys like Uber drivers will hate Tesla robotaxi's! In south Africa traditional taxi drivers attack and sometime kill Uber drivers! But i think it will take decades before arriving in SA tho

  17. Lars, over 90% of all the Cobalt mined in the World is used by the fossil fuel industry and , to a lesser extent, in critical metallurgy. And still the only debate we ever hear is ''bad bad EVs using Cobalt''. This bias gets very tiresome …..

  18. I get the transition to EVs and Robotaxis in the cities but I'm still not convinced by rural Robotaxis. Eight miles from town – ok for someone getting to work if they order a ride early enough (getting stuck behind a slow tractor on the way to work is bad, waiting for a taxi which is stuck behind a tractor on the way to you or on the way to work doubles the chance of a hold-up) but most workers need a ride at the same time and with everyone scattered around doubling up for a journey may not be possible. Also, many people in the countryside need a car to carry stuff. An occasional four bales of straw, a slightly holed bag of layers pellets or some tools in a hatchback is practical, but not in a taxi if it needs cleaning each time.

Also, without a driver will a Robotaxi stay clean? Chewing gum on the seat?

  22. This will prove to be the worst time in history to buy an ICE (internal combustion engine) vehicle or tool. The world is switching to electric vehicles charged from the solar panels on every home, business and covered parking rooftop making nearly everything we do solar powered while completely decentralizing our power supply and empowering everyone as power generation owners.
