I waited 20 years for a Homeworld 3 (and it just got a demo)

PROCLAIMER: This video is not a paid ad, unlike most of the others. I’d never take a bribe to shill a game or otherwise give preferential or censored coverage. I’m a Homeworld player of 25 years since the demo of the first game, and I wanted to make this to evaluate Homeworld 3 and give my findings impartially and with basis in my expertise and history with the games.

Totally unedited other than a brief video glitch at about 54m that I cut out. My first 2 hours of Homeworld 3. Warts and all. No punches pulled. No holds barred.
Feels like a zoomed in and slowed down Homeworld 2 (but somehow sped up so ships die really fast). And the camera and controls are a unique mess. It’s yet another game that doesn’t permit proper rebinding, which is especially bad for lefties who are anywhere from 10-15% of all players, because it just makes playing miserable for them….
…but at least it’s still just a demo: https://gyazo.com/9e859fb981d02527ce1683ee6718ceb6

  1. I booted up Homeworld classic a few months ago and found out that it had been updated in August. The docking system was completely wrecked with glitches that I had never experienced in 24 years. Cant capture ships, issuing docking orders just results in ships endlessly queueing and/or orbiting the mothership and sometimes my ships just fly off the edge of the map. Fuck this game

  2. Just play cata/emergence.
There is a video that I remember of the original homeworld dev gushing about homeworld, and you can literally hear and see the terror on him when they mention gearbox. He goes onto explain how he spend years unbinding homeworld, legally, in a situation I'm not too familiar with, before someone (I think it was actually pitchford) outbid him immediately. The guy talks about going up to him later, and asking why gearbox, a company that does not make rts games, much niche ones like homeworld, and he gave the effective answer of "so I can put it on my mantle"

    Then there's deserts of karak.
I don't know what anyone else expected. The next real homeworld game was never going to be something in the actual series.

I'm definitely not going to buy this game

Reposted without swear word because I'm not sure if youtube allows them

  4. I couldn't stomach the low FPS movement of units in the original Homeworld and stuck to Haegemonia – Legions of Iron in stead, but when the remaster came out, despite its issues, I was finally able to enjoy it and I loved it to bits.
I'd like the end result to be an improved Homeworld 1, but like yourself, I'm not feeding any expectations. Very few publishers can be given the benefit of the doubt. A courtesy I haven't given to any game for a decade.

  5. I personally enjoyed it quite a lot. The delay is a bit of a punch in the face, I don't mind it but I can understand why it would upset some people, but I did enjoy the game overall. The War Games mode seems like an odd choice to include in a demo, although I guess it's just that, a demo.

I wish they could've just shipped some standard RTS sandbox mode vs the AI, even if the AI was bad that could've build a good idea for what the game could become. the new camera controls even if they took a while to get used to. The developers seem to have tried to make some MOBA/RTS mix here where the aim is fast-paced battles, which feels weird because some ships feel really slow compared to what you'd expect them to be, although that may be something they'll change based on feedback.

Further, the UI kind of feels a bit cluttered, or maybe that's just me? I like it feeling more modernised and has a cleaner style to it, but there's just so much everywhere now and lots of wasted screen space as everything is kinda inset towards the center. I did like the new camera controlls now though. They're vastly different from the standard HW1/HW2 controlls which probably annoy some people, although I found the change to be quite good as it kept most of the functionality and added more freedom.

I didn't run into any major bugs from what I could see, probably as I rarely care for small bugs as I know it can be hard to hammer those out without community interference, but I've heard of there being quite many so I don't really rule them out.

I really hope that War Games isn't the only mode they'll have on launch and that we will have the standard MP mode as well. Attack-move not being a thing in the demo is mind blowing though, there's no way they can have a full release without it as attack-move is a core concept in RTS games that players have loved since the dawn of time. I guess all we can do is hope and pray that HW3 isn't another 21st century game filled with bugs on release with the devs promising to fix them 2 years down the line.

  6. I tried playing this solo in a private lobby and with the exception of collectors no ships would persist across missions, and the second mission always spawns 2 destroyers before i so much as touched the objective, which apparently are now good (or rather incredibly lethal) against every single ship type.

But i really only dropped it because i was fighting the camera more than anything in this game, i'm now assuming the delay was because the demo made the devs realize they had a moderate shitshow on their hands and were about to release it.

  7. I was unimpressed by this demo, the bugs, jank and difficult interface can be overcome. However, the MOBA-fication and esports feel of this iteration has me concerned. War Games has an addictive, fast paced, quick reward style that is ripe for monetisation. Also, the Suppression Frigate is poorly designed.

  8. th UI is just to gigantic. They really need to tone that down or add UI scaling options. Also I hope dogfights getting improved. Other than that can't wait for the game. Also hope new factions get released… and the mods for this gonna be insane!
