In this fireside chat, Greg talks about his FIRST survival challenge, running away from home when he was 13 to live in the wilderness.
Greg is a self-taught survivalist from Canal Flats, British Colombia, who, since he was a boy, has read nearly every book on the topic. When he is not out in the wilderness, he is a professional dry-waller. He started his first bow drill fire when he was thirteen and spent the next forty years learning bushcraft and studying plants and edibles. He has even developed some of his own survival techniques and is a skilled hunter with both a bow and a slingshot.

Hi Greg! I grew up in Langley, Ft Langley, Old Yale etc in the 70's. Wasn't it paradise back then? And the First Blood in '81 in Golden Ears and Hope. I ran from home too at the time. Two other buddies and I. They had an abusive father, and they ran away for real, and I tagged along. I remember taking a pair of side-cutters, and we actually burrowed into the massive blackberry domes, snip, snip, snip – until we were in deep enough that a rabbit couldn't penetrate. Same as you, my father found us eventually, and we all had to go home. Your story took me all the way back, and rekindled those old memories that I haven't thought of in years. And then of course the whole area became suburbia, pavement, and all of that incredible Lower-Mainland forest long gone…

How can there be way too much bacon ?π
Hey Greg, I'm really enjoying this series, sounds like you've got an treasure trove of life experiences and I'm looking forward to hearing more π
Good one Greg …..
cant wait for the book thanks
I like Grizzly Adams watched it growing up
I enjoyed your story and I subscribed today. I never even thought of living off grid until that past 10 years or so. I'm not a weak person, but I'm 68 years old. I'm not sure I have the physical strength to live off the land at this part of my life. Even so, I can live vicariously through you and others who are enjoying the off-grid lifestyle. All best wishes! I look forward to seeing more videos.
we are almost the same age and I read the same books, I own the Dick Proenneke documentaries (there are 4 now) 2 on VHS and 2 on CD (not that I can play them anymore).. they are: Alone in the Wilderness Alone in the Wilderness II Silence & Solitude The Frozen North
I have many of the same books you do too…remember that Bradford Angier did have a very skilled wife names Vera. I think our libraries look alike. Great story and great fun., thanks Greg.
The smoke is the best part of the fireside chat itβs what makes us different than campground peopleπ

I ran away from home at 13 and I had my own boat. My dad gave me and we built the boat my ownπ’
Cabin build should touch base with Youtuber Bushradical and do a colab. He really loves building them.
Living the dream!
I live in the woods it's awesome.
Growing up, my father and I read a book called My Side Of The Mountain. it was about a kid who ran away up into the mountains at 13, and to this day even over the age of 20, I still think about doing something similar.. but your story sort of reminds me of this amazing book
Greg!! β€β€ love the bones of you dude!! To have a dream- and to be brave enough to set out!!ππ₯π looking forward to your movie!!

I fantasized about this for years after seeing My Side of the Mountain inβ69. I cherish my yellowed copy of Olsenβs book.π
I hope that book is a biography of Your life, Greg. You are one interesting guy !
This means alot truly.. More than you may know. Thank you kind sir.
Good story!
Sorry bud, but you were not 13 in that pic.
I did the same thing up in the Catskills. I lived in a tree and raised a falcon and stole strawberries from a nearby farm.
Thankfully, Dad found you. At 13 you weren't ready with the skills or necessary tools (an axe, knives, fire starting kit, etc.). But, today, you're a wilderness badass. I enjoy your fire side chats
