Skyrim's a great game… after 200 or so mods.

I always just assumed they were just being massive hypocrites about it in-universe.
Now that you've changed some of your GOTYs, how would you rank the GOTYs of the 2010s now?
I never imagined that Yahtzee would choose to wear a fedora, especially to his wedding. I find the idea hilarious, regardless of whether it's true. However, I do hope he didn't actually wear any hat to his wedding, especially not a fedora (unless it was just a prop).
Saints Row 4 is still in my top most fun gaming experiences. For pure silly over the top goodness, it’s really hard to beat. The trajectory of fun in GTA and Saint Row seem to be inversely proportional. Hopefully that means GTA 6 will pickup the slack that the “new” saints row left laying around.
Now if we can all just turn around and recognize BioShock 2 as an underrated, worthy follow-up to the first game. (And while we're at it, get a follow-up to that with Eleanor Lamb as the lead.)
I played through The New Order recently and was myself blown away by it. It is far better than it gets any credit for.
aint no way you wore a fedora to your wedding
Another great thing about Batman Arkham City is that when you're done you can still play the stealth and combat challenges. There is nothing so satisfying as beating the snot out of hordes of mooks.
i think tattoos have a similar weight.
Awwww, Yahtzee went back to his "Let's Drown Out" days. Is he feeling nostalgic for his time down under?
Like that Arkham City is getting love, when you reviewed it I think you said it was too mucy like AA
I played Bioshock Infinite for the first time last year and kind of hated it. I knew I would've liked it more if I'd played it longer ago and I just constantly regretted not doing that.
Definitely a very important game but everything that was good about it has been rapidly outdone by so many other games that I think it has aged pretty awfully
Arkham City is hot dogshit, though. The open world just fucks up the metroidvania-esque format. It just becomes a mindless roamer.
The Smash TV Lets Drown Out is even funnier in retrospect
Did tou ever revisit New Vegas? At the time you wrote it off for bugs, and while not bug free, it's one of the most reactive narratives out there. I'd also say if you liked it's narrative reacrion and adaptive to try Tactics Ogre….but strategy game. Though the Reborn version from a couple years is the most digestible version by miles.
Source- This crazy loon has made hundreds of videos about it.
See, that's where you're wrong. Dredge is number one.
Ah this was the last era I really played games on release, nostalgic!
I loved Shovel Knight when I first played it. Something about it is incredibly charming.
However, playing it a second time? It felt incredibly mediocre.
what does post dad game mean?
I would really love to see if your opinion on the last of us has changed. For better or worse.
I’ll say this about shadow of mordor: I feel like it shares an analogy with El Shadai. Besides being a basic arena brawler, I remember how I constantly was getting interrupted mid game by various angel minibossess. My problem with shadow of mordor is that, it never took the rivalry thing too far. It lacks a kind of constraint in a way the forced battles with the angels in el shadai kind of benefitted from, which gave the vibe of fighting a shiny pokemon or randomly encountering a rare pokemon in the wild. Now that I think of shadow of mordor as this kind of build your miniboss kind of experience, I think I’d like to see games balance this kind of unique encounters system between a direct fixed path of el shaddai where we get random encounters, and the flexibility and customize-ability of shadow of mordor. Playing the old Dragons Dogma feverently the last few months, the game is kind of a one man mmo with it’s pawn systems. Shadows of Mordor is like a one man mmo based around pvp. So if dragons dogma could add the ability to fight player created pawns willy nilly or arbitrarily interrupt quests as dark souls invasions are supposed to work, we could have the potential for rare encounters off the beaten path with the flexibility and customize ability of shadow-save, customize-ability being tailored by other players and negating that whole rivalry system embargo WB tossed together.
I recently replayed Wolfenstein: The New Order. I absolutely love the game, but the ending is absolute dog shit. SPOILER ALERT: He is left to die alone on a roof while in radio contact with a helicopter at the base of that same building.
What I'd be interested to see is it Yahtzee has ever revisited games he inistially disliked and come away with a different opinion. No necessarily liking the game now, but maybe a more nuanced perspective.
Off topic, but I keep looking at the Indiana Jones shortcut icon and I keep having to double check that it. Somehow, Yahtzee has surpassed fucking Indiana Jones with regards to that hat imagery.
Yahtzee: Stop spreading the myth that I don't like games!
Also Yahtzee: In retrospect, here's games I praised far too much, let's fix that
Honestly a bit surprised about FTL as Yahtzee is the person that intrigued me to play it. Can't remember what exactly it was, possible a video with Gabe, but he seemed obsessed with it.
Oh Jesus. I had that car play mat when I was a kid. I haven't thought of that in many years but remembered it immediately.
Wonder how you'll feel about Stetsons in 10 years.
Haha yahtzee, Gabriel literally called bio shock out on LDO back in 2014, you owe him an apology
I don't think it's just about getting older. There's good reasons why "The best 2014 game to play in 2014" might not be the same as "The best 2014 game to play in 2024”
I'm trying to put those reasons into words, but I'm struggling a bit
My God man thank you for the New Order recommendation. Totally slept on this one. They don't make em like this any more.
Young Blood was really fun for the co-op at least.
I think it's only fair to always challenge our past selves' opinions and preferences.
That's how I usually keep my gaming standards high by always challenging my old favorites with the exceptionally good new ones. FTL has survived such a gauntlet for a long time but it's the oldest one in my collection now that I am still willing to replay from time to time.
Well. Of course best games of 2014 will be different when you come back to them 10 years later. You're a different person. But it's quite interesting consept to choose best games of the year for example 5 years after their release.
Without context 6:53 that looks like "Getting married was a horrible idea"
FTL multiverse mod has had me blow 1000+ hours on the thing
I think the reason why Shadow of Mordor won is cuz no one saw it coming. The game was a delightful surprise that just kept getting better. Sure in hindsight it's just a Arkham combat Ubisoft formula thing, but during the year of its release it just blindsided all other games. And even now rather than being just another of those I'd actually say it remains the best of them. It's the game where you do nothing original, outside the Nemesis system, but you do everything so well and fun that it still elevates the experience beyond just being a copy.
Bioshock infinite as well, I remember having no idea what to make of it during early footage and screenshots and so on, and did not expect it to turn out so good after looking like one of those hit or miss sequels before, most likely a miss. So when it turned out good once again the surprise factor elevated it.
God, the validation feels good. I remember when he said Bioshock: Infinite was his GotY and I was just baffled. Yahtzee had inspired so much interest in me for gaming as a storytelling medium and to see him call B:I GotY was a betrayal to 20-year-old me.
Hey, hey! The best game about being a pirate remains and will be for quite some time, Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire
I don't think you were wrong, the choices were just products of their time, due to circumstances at the time.

Wolfenstein NWO has an entertaining story, but it has some very, very stupid moments. Bioshock Infinite is easily one of the worst games ever. It's bad not only because of its messy story and caricaturization of american exceptionalism and racism, but also because of the spongy boring bosses, mediocre gunplay, mediocre level design and bad characters. Elizabeth is a Disney princess that doesn't act at all like someone that has been isolated for her entire life. Making her invulnerable and invisible to the enemies gave casuals the illusion of having a good "escorting mission", when there is no escorting mission at all because that character doesn't need any protection in the first place. Having companions that are vulnerable and can't defend themselves IN GAMEPLAY and need the player's help IS THE POINT OF AN ESCORTING MISSION, THE "PROTECTING" PART IS THE POINT. There's always room for improvement of course, but what Bioshock Infinite did was pathetic and no solution at all. Do you want a shooter from 2013 with good gunplay mechanics, superpowers, a companion that doesn't need protection and an actual good story??? forget about Bioshock Infinite, PLAY SHADOW WARRIOR.
yahtzee sounds like he has throat cancer
doesn't matter if anyone "dies" or goes through any amount or type of pain and torture, in the endeavor of doing the right thing
firstly, there is no such thing as "death" and "life" itself is a dream
then, the greater and worthy the challenges that we face and outgrow, the greater our evolution and elevation, etc
also, we don't "die" before we finish whatever we've chosen to arrive here to do; and the addiction to "surviving" is just born of fixating on the body's lowest instincts, to the point of no longer expressing personal awareness on anything else
so, don't fear "death" and "pain". don't fear anything.
