Enjoyed this one.
Laity are lay persons, meaning people not initiated into the priesthood, that is everyone not is the Cult Mechanicus
Like the space combat it’s a nice mechanic
I do prefer the Battlefleet Gothic style turn based space combat to Armada. Your ship looks like an old Sword Class Frigate but with a torpedo bank upgrade which is very nice.
Just like the priesthood is the collective of all priests, the laity is the collective of all lay people (those not consecrated in the eyes of God).
All three starships from the begining, where player can pick are FRIGATES (lenght under 2kilometers, crew number around 25K), wich means in comparison to cruiser (middlesized ship, lenght under 4Kilometers, crew around 75K)
1) not especially good for EXPLORER (small for trully BIG supplies of everything needed on the long voyage and if successfull, small to transport the spoils back to imperium)
2) not especially good for TRADER – minimum cargoholds in comparison to dedicated hauler, or specialist hybrid Rogue trader ship called galeon (wich HAS the cargoholds of hauler AND weaponry of cruiser).
3) not expecially good for MILITARY actions either – quick enough to run from most oponents, but with quite weak and innumerous weaponry.
Only 3 obvious pluses of using frigate as rogue trader, is speed, low price (of ship an spareparts) and low technical complexity (i.e. easy repairs).
Laity is the population outside of the priesthood in a society.
