Awesome thanks
Bonehunters was the book that really pulled me into the Malazan series, it’s odd to say with so many pages before it but the ones before felt more separated from each other compared to bonehunters and the books to come. I’m just going to leave that overly long sentence as is, I can’t be bothered to fix it lol
i am commenting this before watching, but we are glad you are having a great time. I mean otherwise, why would you even bother to vlog in the first place.
Master and Commander is one of my favorite movies of all time! Actually shocked to hear it didn't do great numbers, I mean, it was peak Russel Crow era!
Also, I love how much you love wearing a word you hate… or have you come around on undulating? I'd enjoy an undulating update.
Wow! So neat that you're reading the Aubrey series. I didn't expect that…although I suppose it's a natural fit with your pirate obsession. I've read all of the three major fighting sail series (Hornblower, Bolitho and Aubrey) and this one is my favorite because it explores the characters and their flaws more and not just the fighting. And I think O'Brian is the best of the three writers. Aubrey and Maturin couldn't be more different, which makes their relationship all the more charming. Enjoy!
It warms my heart to see you love what you do.
For Monster, even though you're doing the chats with Philip and Petrik, is it ok if you still tell us what chapters/volumes you read for the vlog week?
I read the first Master and Commander book years ago. Always meant to continue on with the series but somehow haven't yet. The movie is one of my all time favorites though.
Also reading the Bonehunters myself, Ch 7 was wild
Merphy, I am glad you enjoyed the book. Fun Fact: There's a bar in New Orleans named after Patrick O'Brian.
Part 2 of the Bonehunters is just something else. Really hit hard for me.
Merphy, I've been watching your channels for some time and love to hear your take on different books and genres. You can't know how excited I am to see you are starting the Aubrey/Maturin series. It is one of my favorite series of novels of all time. The naval technical detail O'Brian puts in his books. I thought the movie was a great take on the series overall and wish there could have been a sequel.
Can you please do a dedicated spoiler vlog for Chapter 7 of Bonehunters? That chapter is WILD. This book has 2 climaxes and you're about to read the first. The chapter is like 120pgs lmao
That was hilarious, I can't stop laughing!😄
I absolutely understand what you mean what you say about Erikson's "small sentence" writing. His ability to to so perfectly evoke and sum up complicated real emotions and dynamics with such brevity is just…so good. One of the favorite aspects of the series to me. Yeah the world building is astounding, the characters and plot are good, etc.
But the evocative prose is what truly elevates the series, IMO.
Ahh, Master and Commander! I've seen it 3 or 4 times, which is unusual for me. The book was too slow for me, but I had a feeling you'll enjoy it, once I saw a box set in some other video. I'll gladly watch the spoiler video!
My husband loves the Aubrey/Mautrin series. He's read 10 or 15 of them, but I don't think he's read them all. I promised him I would give them a shot sometime. I love the movie as well!
I freaking ADORE Master and Commander but isn't your edition notorious for having a ton of typos? lol
Master and Commander is such a good series. As much as everyone hates it when people say this, the first two books really are very dry and slow. The third one picks up a little bit, but it's in the fourth book, The Mauritius Command, that the footing is found and the series just absolutely takes off with fun, action, drama, intrigue, etc. It took me almost two years to get through the first three books and then I read the remaining series (at the time 13 more books) in almost two years (almost, because he was still alive and publishing, back then). As Fighting Jack Aubrey would say, "There's not a moment to lose!"
Edit: After watching to the end of the video — the movie is based on book 10: The Far Side of the World and stays relatively close to the source material.
Oh I loved the Master and Commander books! I think of them as kind of in-universe companions to Jane Austen’s books in the sense that she was a literary influence on Patrick O’Brian (at least I think that was the case but I might be wrong) and the series occurs around the same time that she was writing her books. I keep meaning to go back and finish them so I would love a review if you are up to it!
You could have a code to talk some little spoiler thinga like "if you see this on screen im about to say a spoiler." Or you say "jump to the time rhat sats on the screen". Or if it is just a single name like you mentioned just say "close your eyes for a bit. Im going to write it on the screen"
Also im just starting Malazan (ive finished chapter 1 of the first book!) and Ive been enjoying it, but I also have book 5 of wheel of time on the tbr next so wish me luck for so much info haha
Glad to hear you liked Master and Commander. I love the movie, but haven’t read the books yet, but from what you say here, I’m pretty sure I’ll love it. It sounds like exactly what I like.
Have you read/watched the Horatio Hornblower series? That’s another great nautical series (that I still need to read the books for).
Yghattan is incredible
I read the first book in the Aubrey–Maturin series a while ago, maybe it’s time I continue on with the series!

I'm so glad you're enjoying Malazan so much. It's been long enough for me that I'm not catching all of your vague references, but it's fun seeing someone experiencing these books for the first time regardless.
Master and Commander (the movie, don't know much about the books) has kinda started to have a resurgence in appreciation among people. I think it's really great, sometimes movies just don't hit well on release for multiple reasons, but I'm glad M&C has gotten the love it deserves, even if it took awhile
I think there turns out to be a reason for the goat but it's not a pleasant one to say the least. Or maybe it was just because they'd eat any refuse and for the milk. Let's stick to that. It was apparently a thing historically.
When you read that quote from malazan, it literally gave me chills. Ugh keep breaking me down to read this series, please hahaha
