Hunting’s Hardest Lessons, EHD Claims GIANT 180”+ Buck #deerhunting #hunting

On this week’s episode, we begin kick things off with Kaleb Greiner in Eastern Iowa as he continues the search for his target buck “Lucky.” Hoping to gather more intel during a scouting mission, Kaleb stumbles upon another familiar giant buck and multiple other deer that have died from an outbreak of EHD. Then, following the second cold front that has entered the fold this season, we join Gavin Koterba in Eastern Iowa and Tyler Behlmann in Northern Missouri. Both have close calls with their target bucks leading to many lessons learned and the continuation of both stories as we enter some of the best days of season. Lastly, we catch up with Mike Reed in Eastern Iowa who gives an update on his season so far and what we have to look forward to entering the final days of October.

  1. So you carry the stand in then leave it because you wanted to hunt it in the morning? By doing that, leaving ground scent at the spot you want to hunt? Why not just hang it? Or use the stand! Good chance things are different if you just hang the set and hunt it where you wanted.

Were you late? Why even hunt if you aren’t gonna put in all the effort to make it as ethical as possible? Sad to see a buck of that caliber get infection because you didn’t put in your full effort and not make it another 2 weeks.

Didn’t think I would see that out of MW, maybe he doesn’t know the standard yet? Or maybe that is the standard at MW now.

  2. You think there's a possibility that all the garbage like pestecticides, weed killers, ect. we spray on plants and put into the soil along with bioengineering might contribute to diseases?

  5. Caleb the average life expectancy for a white tailed buck is 3 to 3.5 years old. Just look at like this he had 8 years of spreading his genes around. You'll have to put a lot of time back in that area. I wouldn't hunt there for a few years but do the things necessary to help the deer recover and get some age. Also I would highly recommend doing some of the things that Lee Lakosky is doing. The feed he uses to the insecticide that he uses that kills biting and non biting midges ticks flies and mosquitoes. I don't know if you have the time or $ to invest but according to Lee they haven't seen EHD in like 9 years! Plus the deers coats are dang near perfect just showing what attention to detail can do for the quality of life for the deer. Deer are bothered by flies, mosquitoes, and other biting insects. So having a field to lay in and not get pestered by insects draws more deer in and if itself… Never thought doing those kinds of things could be so beneficial but it's quite clear that it does. Lee even makes sure to move the feeders after they trample all the grass down to bare dirt because when it rains that's where midges hatch.

  6. Check out what Lee Lakosky does to prevent the disaster that Caleb is going through. I thought there was nothing we as hunters could do to try and slow the spread of EHD but Lee Lakosky has proven me wrong. All of you should watch this episode despite how you may feel about Lee Lakosky but him and Bill Winke are my heroes!

  7. Also the kid hunting out of the blind it sounds like either your limb or cam just barely hit the blind right at the end of the shout. I don't think being 11-12 more yards that your arrow would be hitting the dirt at the deer or just passed him which is 3ft low. The deer was alert and ducked slightly so your 30 yard pin should have just barely hit him low. Definitely contact with the blind imo glad it missed clean though and good luck getting another shot opportunity on him.
