If anyone who doesnt already know is curious about some of the references in this song, Flann O'Brien's 'The Third Policeman' is an absolute surrealist Irish classic gem of a book. No way to do it justice in a youtube comment but the main character is a pub owner who kills his neighbour the old man Mathers with a shovel to steal his savings and finance his own life's work, annotating a collected works of "De Selby", a made-up crackpot physicist whose bizarre "experiments" are written into the footnotes of the book itself. Strange, haunting, lonely, hilarious book and one that's clearly touched Hozier to create these songs
