Two tunnels, viz, the Eastward and the Westward have successfully connected the twin cities of Kolkata and Howrah under River Hooghly in 66 days; thanks to the Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) christened Prerana and Rachana!!! Rabindra Setu took six years to get completed, and Vidyasagar Setu thirteen years. When the entire network will be completed, it will connect the two main rail-stations of the metropolis – Howrah and Sealdah.

The tunnels are 520 meters long, with Internal diameter of 5.55 meters and external diameter 6.10 meters. Spacing between the twin tunnels is 16.1 meters Center to Center, and Depth of the Tunnels is 16 meters below river bed. Maximum Tunnel Gradient is approximately 3%; and they are set with 275 mm thick segmental precast reinforced concrete liners of M50 Grade. Maximum face pressure below the river is approximately three times of atmospheric pressure.
To Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Limited, safety comes first. To prevent water seepage, meticulously designed concrete using fly ash and micro silica as admixtures was used to reduce water permeability. There are adequate primary grouting using cement slurry with sodium silicate at the tunnel, and the secondary grouting used cement slurry through pre-determined grout port kept in each segmental liners. These grout ports have been designed suitably to cater the requirement in operation stage also. Each concrete liner segment is fitted with imported neoprene main gasket and hydrophilic auxiliary gasket. The hydrophilic gasket expands when in contact with water and prevents any water ingress through segmental joints.
