Howard Blackburn: Gloucester's Greatest Fisherman (Part 2)

Gloucester, Massachusetts is America’s oldest seaport. For most of its 400 year history, Gloucester was the fishing capital of the world. Its lifeblood is dangerous & costly. More than 10,000 people have left this port & lost their lives in the Atlantic. When disaster strikes, few live to tell the tale.

But one fisherman’s story of survival at sea surpasses all others. And his ambition & daring made him a legend in Gloucester & one of the most celebrated seafarers in history. This is the story of Howard Blackburn.

From producer Kory Curcuru of 1623 Studios, the public access station serving Cape Ann, we present the second installment of Timeline: Cape Ann – Howard Blackburn.

    Crossing the Bar

    Sunset and evening star,

And one clear call for me!

And may there be no moaning of the bar,

When I put out to sea,

But such a tide as moving seems asleep,

Too full for sound and foam,

When that which drew from out the boundless deep

    Turns again home.

    Twilight and evening bell,

    And after that the dark!

And may there be no sadness of farewell,

    When I embark;

For tho’ from out our bourne of Time and Place

The flood may bear me far,

I hope to see my Pilot face to face

When I have crost the bar.
