How Ukrainian F-16 apparently downed the Russian Su-34 ?

West-supplied Ukrainian F-16 seems to have landed its first air-to-air fighter jet kill.

As per reports, one of Moscow’s fighter jets has been shot down by Ukrainian forces.
The Telegram channel Fighterbomber which has close ties with the Russian Aerospace Forces, looked like paid tribute to the lost Su-34 fighter by simply posting a black and white photo with the words: β€œEarth is sky brothers…”,Β

The pro-Moscow Telegram channel VDV for Honesty and Justice shared the post, added more detail,
β€œUrgent!!! Our Su-34 has been shot down. The crew was killed,”. It further added it β€œwas apparently shot down by an F-16, which was over enemy-controlled territory.”
It also said that the plane had been attacked during an air bomb drop β€œapproximately 50 km (30 miles) from the front line,”

  1. No matter if you like Russia or USA , Is no doubt American πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ technology is way ahead of Russian technology. For whatever reason πŸ€¦πŸ½β€β™‚οΈ

  2. The fact that it could be an F-16 is the clue here. Something else, likely very stealthy and non-Ukrainian, is taking these shots. Just as with the A-50U. The AMRAAM/Viper is a place holder to legitimize that NATO asset.

Keep in mind, the Ukrainians were also taking Patriot shots, sniping these self-same Su-34s glide bombers.

Then Krasukha 2/4 jammers and SA-27 Gollums were moved up with the 9R31M missile (Mach 7+, active radar), and the Russian radio electronic folks started blinding the MPQ-65 radars and swatting the PAC-2GEM/PAC-3 CRI SAMs in flight while Su-35s suppressed with Kh-31s and things changed as Su-34s, which had been pulled back, once more began hitting targets at intermediate depths, some 30-40nm beyond the FLOT again.

The F-16s should be even easier to counter because, unlike the Patriot batteries which are invisible unless moving (satellite IMINT) or emitting (Il-20 ELINT aircraft) it is fairly simple to track airborne F-16s.

The other thing to consider is that these Ukrainian jets have to come from Starokostyantyniv or Havryshivka air fields, _at the closest_, to reach the active fronts around Kharkov or Pokhrovsk. That's a 783nm run at low level. The Israelis, who are a lot more experienced F-16 pilots than the Ukrainians, were running on fumes, trying to fly 550nm at low level to reach the Osirak nuclear complex. And they had three tanks and no high-end threat IAMDS waiting for them.

If the ZSU base those F-16AMs any closer, even if it's just relay staging for refueling purposes, at someplace like Myrhorod or Vasylkiv, they risk being hit at their basing mode by Russian Iskander or Kh-101 missiles. As happened with those six Su-27s.

The other question that needs answering is where the Su-35 escorts are. These jets typically fly with a pair each of R-37/77/73 and often a couple Kh-31 ARMs. To act as a lead sweep for the Su-34s. With the Hellducks up at 45,000ft to get best standoff for their UMPK weapons, it should be no big deal for the Su-35s to see the Vipers snapping up with relatively short range AIM-120C6/C7.

You cannot loft AMRAAM from close to the ground (in clutter) and expect to hit a transonic target, way up above the tropopause, as soon as you snap up, you will be seen. Probably by the No-35 Irbis, certainly by the various GCI radars on the ground or in the Mainstay, which are feeding the Russians tactical picture, via datalink.

You're not going to outrun an Axehead with an F-16, after a 15-20nm snapup launch. Just not going to happen. Get the lucky shot? Maybe. But not get away from the ambush. And the Ukrainians have neither the spare aircraft nor likely missiles to throw away on indecisive attrition.

The ZSU Su-27, killed at 220km/120nm by a MiG-31, is perhaps the best case example of what happens when you throw a second line, generation older, jet at a modern 4.5+ fighter here. Even with APG-83 and AIM-120D + ALQ-211 as full POBIT, it would be difficult. With APG-66V2 and AIM-120B/C? Not a chance.

The details simply don't line up which means that, while the scenario is possible, it is not probable, something is being held back.

  3. Norway has given Ukraine either 2 or 4 I can’t remember, AWACS planes similar to the US Navy’s Hawkeye twin propeller planes. These ones donated by either Norway or Sweden or Finland are made by Saab. They are 2 propeller driven and have a radar dome on the top the plane. They look almost identical to the US Navy’s E2 Hawkeye planes.

  5. Thats what happens when you lie about your military capabilities,
The Soviet Union did for many year's
And the west bought it thinking they were falling behind, so they put in extra effort to try to catch up when in reality they were neck in neck and thats actually put them far ahead of the Soviets and russia,

  6. Seems to me that very soon Ukraine will have a radical change to it's forces such that no military will be able to take them on. It's only a matter of time until they have drones that will be capable of taking out most aircraft. Does anyone have a counter?

  7. I dont know why people are surprised. The russian airforce has a dismal record. Even in soviet times. They brag about the capabilities of there fighters/military vehicles, great sales pitch, the customers get false courage, the west starts to panic, uses the excuse sell the notions that we must build something to counter, then years later the truth comes out, the boogieman wasn't as dangerous or threatening as he appeared to be. Very much the opposite. There is a reason the Russian airforce rarely ever operates outside the safety net of those anti-air batteries. Their aircraft depend on those systems for protection. Now im sure if maybe the russian airforce chamged the way they operate then the situation MIGHT….be totally different. Stone cold fact is American Military is made to go, to be used, alot… Russia military and those that emulate them are made for show. Great paint job, polished, shiny, to awe its citizens… Exist soley as a threat that probably isnt something that can be delivered on. That stealth drone that went down the other dayπŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ yeah state of the art, futuristic.
