How to Paint 'Mars' bases: Texture Paints Explained!

In this tutorial we’re learning how to do our favourite basing scheme! We’ve used this on all our warhammer 40k/Horus Heresy Space Marines, and it’s a powerful scheme, that always does a great job of setting your miniatures in a world, and giving them a great narrative.

If you’ve ever struggled to control texture-paint (Agrellan Earth, Martian Ironearth) we’ve got some amazing tips for getting predictable effective results, and also stopping the paint from flaking off, which is a real issue with delicate dry products.

  1. Perfect timing, just as I thought about how to do my red desert bases for my Ossiarch Bonereapers. Does it also work to prime the crackle paste instead of varnishing them first?

  2. Byron, I've watched all the videos and I got some series d (that I rarely use), just wanted to say I really appreciate the extra effort with the editing in this video 👍👍👍👍👍

  3. I love texture paints – I'll be honest I havent come across the same issues with fragility that you mention in the video. I've only ever tried to varnish one (using brush varnish admittedly) and it ruined the effect completely. I also put a wash onto them once they're dry and they handle it just fine, along with some heavy dry brushing after.

I've got 2,500 points of CSM that have managed quite frequent handling, but I do transport mine using magnetic boxes rather than foam which is probably a lot harsher on the paint.

I use a combo of the agrellan earth and agrellan badland to get a mix of dry cracked ground and mud – if you havent tried it you should 100% give it a go.

  4. Or you get some of AK Interactive's big tubs of quality texture paints. 250 ml for about €10,5 compared to GW's tiny 24 ml pots for €6,5. Vallejo also make some value texture paints, 200 ml for €12,5.
also, base rims are one color and one color only and that is Goblin Green!
