Puss in Boots: The Last Wish comes out of nowhere to be one of the best movies of the year. And while there are many reasons for it, among the top is the villain, the big bad wolf aka Death. I’ve covered some of this strengths before like in videos like How to Introduce a Villain but today let’s try to find a couple new qualities to steal for our own villains.

Puss has burned through eight of his nine lives, though he lost count along the way. Getting those lives back will send Puss in Boots on his grandest quest yet. 2. I like how none of the characters are true heroes or villains. They're all deeply flawed, representing different ways of confronting the "Big Bad Guy" which is actually processing their own personal trauma

  3. Is it just me or does this movie remind me of potc dead man’s chest because in puss in boots the last wish, it’s a race to get a wish puss, Goldilocks and Jack Horner want for reasons. Puss had already lost his confidence when he sees death too and when he’s being forced to fight, he gains his confidence back

  4. to crudly sum up the message of this very well done video, to make a good villain, make him with a point, a goal that puts him at odds with the main character, so he/she's not just evil to advance the plot.

  6. I think you mentioned this in one of your older videos: characters should never just fight each other, something else has to be going on.

Puss and Boots handles that perfectly. Every fight has some deeper meaning behind it, which is part of why the fight scenes feel so awesome.

  8. 100% agree with everything said here, but I have one addition, in that I don't think Death was ever TRULY out to take Puss's last life, otherwise he could've EASILY done so at the bar. He sent Puss a message by making him bleed and realize he wasn't immortal, then sending him on the run to learn to value life, while constantly being right on his heels to make sure he didn't relax and forget his purpose. I mean, just listen to some of his last words (paraphrasing her) "I came for a cat who thought he was above life itself, but I don't see him anymore". Death was pissed that Puss had evaded him for so long, yes, but as we learn in the crystal cave he is more angry that Puss has wasted all those lives while not appreciating any of them. Then when he learns, during the final battle, that Puss has indeed learned to value life and those around him, the chase stops. Death could've easily kept fighting and been like "Okay so you've learned your lesson, but I still want your head", but he didn't. Ergo, he was never truly out for him in the first place, he merely wanted make sure Puss learned to appreciate the one life he had left.

  9. What I loved about the wolf is the fact he's so relatable, he isn't a dude who's bad or against the villain because they just hate each other he's just a dude doing his job and getting annoyed he didn't get results after doing his best. Most villains like Thanos, Darkside and the Joker have a sort of "Despite everything we need to remind you they're the bad guys!" And just sort of feel that role but the Wolf whenever he speaks just isn't written in a way that makes him hateable and is actually pretty charming in a down to earth kind of way in contrast to Puss' arrogant way of speaking.

Like seriously if I just met him in a bar I feel like The Wolf would be a great drinking buddy

  10. If I have nickle for every time a story introduced antagonist who become iconic despite the lack of screentime and introduced in later part of the story, I would have two. Which is not a lot, but it feels really something that it happened twice
