*** ABOUT ME ***
Hello! My name is Jay, and I am a long-time veteran of storytelling and a semi-seasoned DM! I began playing Dungeons and Dragons roughly 5 years ago and began my first ever game as the DM. I figured things out by watching online games and fumbling my way through the rules, and never looked back! I’ve fallen in love with TTRPG’s in general and want to share my experience and thoughts with the world and community I love so much. I currently DM two separate games regularly, and continue to learn every day.
*** ABOUT THE CHANNEL ***
Play Your Role is a project with the intention of helping inspire and coach players and DM’s alike to add story beats and dramatic moments into their games through basic writing concepts, interesting player character inspirations, and discussions on how to effectively roleplay in a way that helps (not hinders) everyone else’s roleplay at the table!

A little late to the party, but hey algorithm, this video is pretty darn cool, so, bump? bump.
The cool thing about RPGs is, and always has been, that you can play them how you want.
Don't want furry PCs or role playing/story arcs involving fetishes, sex, and/or political ideologies? – you don't have to have them in your game.
There is no obligation to game with people who want content that makes you uncomfortable or doesn't align with your beliefs.
In fact, I'm starting a campaign very soon without any demi-human PCs because that's how this setting operates. ✌️
before i start please read everything before hunting me down.
hello there america, as a european and someone with pretty severe autism and tourettes, and also a Christian. i have a big love hate relationship with the woke culture coming from America.
to make some things first absolutely straight. i dont hate diversity. i dont hate things i dont agree with. i do hate beeing called things im not and please understand i dont mean to offend but neither do i want to have to fear about every sentence i say or type with a mega autistic blundness.
oke so now thats aside. i hate that skin colour, gender and sexuality define how much rights you have to have an opinion and having to say your a white male as if your the true enemy of earth is messed up.
as i dont mind diversity, i DO mind forcing opinions onto others. my autistic brain simply cant comprehend using "they" or "them" to regard to anyone whos genders isnt known yet OR to a group of multiple people. currently in critical role season 3 about every single person is a they and them and the reason i dislike it is that i cant immerse into the story, i cant Invision what to imagine for in my autistic brain i need details… all the details. so when a character or npc gets introduced as they or them. all i have is a weapon and if its a character also an art. but the story is just a silhouette that cant be finished drawing inn the image of the individual. and the biggest issue for me is that it feels like they do it to appease the internet.
diversity is great and im all for it but not everything has to be diverse. amovie about Africa shouldnt be a 50% white cast just to diverse. a storie about woman doesnt need some extra men for diversity.
i think ultimate inclusiveness means to not deny diversity. not to add diversity just for diversity sake.
im lucky to live in europe were the insane mess that is america is a far away thing but i have seen more hate from woke culture than from the things they call hate.
mora of the story: dont fight hate with hate. dont fight exclusivity with forced diversity.
and please if you hear a person yell something offensive, dont get upset.
some ppl cant think about how itsgoing to be received and some ppl even have no control over things they sometimes say.
thats all. id happily answer every question and have conversation with anyone aslong asits civil.
dont forget to love eachother.
To be fair being a PARAGON of Diversity does bring a shitload of absolute creeps into the hobby by design as well.
Just look at the people being mad at Mercer for playing characters like Gilmore or the fact that some people are angry at CR because of the "majority white cast" (which jesus fuck what an utterly racist comment to make).
So has TTRPGs become more inclusive and "Normie" friendly? Sure. Is that always a good thing? Ehhh not really. Mostly because and here´s my personally biggest tidbit with all of this "inclusive" or "LGBT friendly" space making. There are a shitload of people claiming inclusivity or being part of LGBT while at the same time being the utterly worst human scum on earth, you could possibly be. And they´re not getting called out enough. All i´m saying is being a Paragon of Diversity isn´t always a good thing, especially if people ignore the toxic shit that´s coming with it. Cause then you´re basically swapping the Neckbeard elitist toxic with the absolute SJW degeneracy toxic, which sucks just as much. Just more eagerly.
I think it’s really important that you mentioned you had a problem accepting people at one point, it helps illustrate that anybody can change and be more welcoming, accepting, and loving. D&D is for everyone!
This video made me subscribe ♥
Algorithmic punch
the Alphabet Illuminati is the operational name, but you didn't hear it from me. I first learned of it in the 90's over a game of Shadowrun and one of my games had his player and himself come out for the 1st time and I was there to witness it. Imagine my homophobic then conservative self's mind as it struggles with what I understand are toxic thoughts with a very real joy for him. It was one of the first cracks that took down the wall of intolerance and made me an ally
this video was mind-blowing and most definitely a new sub and look forward to watching your work. Take solace you are a great ambassador to the gaming culture..
Gaming has been pretty open to people for a while, especially the TTRPG sector. In the early 70s and 80s it was less accepting, but when I was a kid, we took whoever wanted to sit down with us. It was about how creative, clever, and passionate you were.
Plus, gaming and nerdiness has been an outcast culture since the 70s. I guess ive been lucky enough to be around more open people. Don't let people tell you what you can't or should enjoy, do you, unless it hurts people.
As a trans man I really love dnd, because I’m closeted around a lot of my family. I also play dnd with this same family, and at the table, they refer to me as a man and call me my character’s name, and it’s so freeing
Do you support child grooming then?
Unfortunately for good or ill gatekeeping is going to come back with a vengeance. The problem is you're making the case for it. The alphabet Mafia to start has a cancer it's actively running cover for. Then you have the Nu weirdos who make the old heads look like saints. Sooner or later the fans in name only when they're done wreaking this hobby then what? We have to rebuild the hobby again because of another satanic panic like event. So is gatekeeping going away no it's about to go hard in the paint.
This dude has big golden-retriever-gamer-with-an-alternative-Bisexual-girlfriend vibes (praise).
This exactly. Inclusivity is key to any healthy community, regardless of whether it's DnD or video games, or just talking normally. Being part of the Alphabet Mafia isn't a negative by any means, it's purely a part of who you are. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise
Monsters dont care about your sexuality, and neither should anyone else in the ttrpg hobby. Be yourself play as you wish, and dont politicise the gaming space
The community is super diverse right up until you suggest switching systems. Then all of a sudden your a grognard gatekeeper etc etc lol
Adding a comment even though this video’s a month old cause it doesn’t deserve the disadvantage it has, and maybe hopefully my engagement subscription will help in some tiny way.
Thank you so much for making this video, creating this community, and being so passionate and genuine in your support. I’m a trans girl and seeing stuff like this, knowing there are people like you who care so much, and groups/places not necessarily related to the lgbtq+ community that nonetheless fully accept and embrace people like me, allow us to have fun and connect with others as ourselves, and be treated like completely normal people brings me and so many others so much comfort when those things can often be difficult to come by. <3
4:19– the other thing that might have been a factor are veterans. A surprising number of people in the military played dnd while deployed. The military is also a place that has a surprising amount of diversity. Usually before that diversity gets mainstreamed.
Tieflings are gay. Canon.
Not a scary time.
ive made a dnd character that is bisexual and was once in a poloy relationship
