How I Had an Abortion at Home in Texas | NYT Opinion

This is the true story of a 27-year-old Texas woman and her abortion. She recently overcame a challenge that millions of other girls and women in the United States now face: getting an abortion in a state where lawmakers are closing off access to the procedure. Texas enacted a law outlawing most abortions in September 2021, so women there have navigated obstacles that many more women across the country are now starting to encounter.

In the Opinion video above, the woman describes her struggle this year to figure out how to have an abortion on her own, using medication and without leaving Texas. It’s a lonely, confusing and at times scary journey, which she recounts in her own words.

She feels compelled to tell her story, knowing it will be relevant to many Americans now that the Supreme Court has overturned Roe v. Wade. She hopes others will learn from it.

She did so at great risk. By taking abortion into their own hands, women face very real legal and personal jeopardy — prosecutors are already finding creative ways to punish people who terminate their own pregnancies. She requested anonymity to protect herself, and those who helped her, from the possibility of criminal prosecution. With the woman’s consent, a model was filmed to visualize key moments of the story while maintaining the woman’s anonymity.

Her message is one of defiance, determination and even hope.

  1. Hi, I'm Emily, one of the producers of this Opinion Video. I was really moved by our subject’s story, full of anxiety, deception, and uncertainty. But mostly, I see it as a story of determination. What did you think of the video, and her story? I'm happy to answer any questions you might have about how we made it.

  2. Translation “I could have waited till marriage, and been financially stable, but decided to not make him wear a rubber. And this is how I DIY murder my baby” just regulate yourself. If you don’t want to be in this situation then don’t, it sounds so simple. That’s cause it’s soooooo simple

  3. Guys there is this guys named MISTERISE in the comment section who keeps going comment after comment telling women to stay salty and that pro life always be winning and stuff. No one listen to that stuff. Its best to ignore people like that because the truth is. Abortion bans only stops clinics NOT the actual abortion. What the pro sadist group that calls themselves pro life dont realize is the fact that women will just cause their own miscarriages. When abortions are banned. Women take matters into their own hands. Just like what we saw in this video. Women can easily fall off their bed on their side if they wanted to end a pregnancy. You can even use coat hangers or what the lady in this video did. And the list goes on and on. There are even videos on how to have a self manage abortions. I recommend all of you women search that up. They can be really helpful when clinics get banned. But honestly in the end women still win because women can just end the pregnancy themselves and no one can prove its done on purpose or by accident. So thank you all for having abortions and saving children from being born in this world.

  4. This is evil. Why are we still justifying the murder of the unborn child? The location of the baby, inside or outside the womb, doesn’t determine their value and worth. We’re all made in the image of God from conception.

  5. Whether you choose to have an abortion at home or at a clinic, abortion is murder. Activists don't associate abortion with murder because it is an easy decision to live with.

  6. It’s weird everyone talking about abortions but no one is talking about funding the foster homes. Most people would say just give the kid to a foster home without even donating nor helping out foster homes.

  7. When I had my abortion I wanted to take the pills and do it at home, but the clinic talked me into the surgical option. In Indiana they don't numb you and give you a strong Tylenol ( I took 5 min before), it was the most painful 10 min of my life and took about 2 1/2 weeks to stop bleeding. It blows my mind that anyone could think that it could be used as BC.

After the only thing I felt was absolute relief even in pain and I absolutely have zero regrets.
