The story of Colossus unveils a pivotal chapter in the history of computing and code-breaking during World War II. Developed by British engineers at Bletchley Park, Colossus was the world’s first programmable electronic computer, designed with the specific purpose of deciphering encrypted German messages. Completed in 1944, Colossus played a crucial role in breaking the Lorenz cipher, a high-level code used by the German military. Its innovative design and groundbreaking capabilities marked a significant leap forward in computational technology, demonstrating the power of electronic machines in handling complex cryptographic tasks. The success of Colossus significantly contributed to the Allied victory, showcasing the transformative potential of early computing technology and setting the stage for future advancements in the field.

Awesome! Any plans for an ENIAC video?
I wonder if it would shut down if you showed it the picture of a chicken.
The skill and ingenuity of those at Bletchly park in the war is flaberghasting. What levels of genius those men acheived. Amazing.
Is it a computer or is it a computation machine?
Make a video about automaton's!
I truly admired and enjoyed the film The Imitation Game I also knew that the story of the scientists of Benchley Park was a much more complex story. I enjoyed your Video Blog.
I have long admired and enjoyed the film The Imitation Game. I also knew the background story of the Benchley scientists (and their machines) was much more complex and nuanced. This was an excellent Video Blog.
In 2013 i could have bought an Enigma machine on eBay for $3,000. Kicking myself, oh well.
If only the early inventers knew how much debauchery there would be thanks to computers and the internet. lmao
Nice to see Tommy Flowers getting recognition in this and other videos – I kind of get the impression he was – to be blunt – shafted rotten by the British class system we have that is happy to profit from the skill of engineers but not give them the credit they deserve.
It is a shame how much of the British contribution to the world of sciences is often blown off or whisked away, deleted, or just forgotten. It is bonkers to think just how fast these beasts are using vacuum tubes.
I wonder if anyone remarked about a German radio operator beating the Colopssus when it was rebuilt?
Nice work again Ryan!
😃
get that bag i guess lol
Some of the history of Colossus, Turing and the code-breakers was covered in the documentary series Station X in the UK a few decades ago – since the decryption work and the computers were classified, those who had worked there hadn't talked about it, for decades after the end of the war, so it was good that finally the public became aware of the incredible breakthroughs and works made at Bletchley, and how vital they were to the Allied war effort. Astonishing to think of all the people who worked there, keeping their secrets for so long, their only reward, knowing themselves that they did their bit for victory.
It's a misnomer that 1 = current and 0 = no current. If it were true, going from 0 to 1 would create a power surge. It's more likely that 1 = a current and 0 = a slightly different current. It was pretty daft of the British government to order the destruction of all the colossus computer and all of the supporting documentation. Unfortunately, the British government should be damned for their responsibility for the death of Alan Turing.
