Star Trek: Deep Space Nine is considered by many to be the best Star Trek series. But how did this come to be, and what contributions does DS9 make to the overall lore of the Trek franchise?

That one episode where Benjamin becomes a 20th century writer is one of the best acted episodes of all Star Trek and also one that directly addresses racism without alien make-up.
Yes! I've been waiting for this retrospective.
Every time I watch one of these retrospectives on any of the shows from TOS up to Enterprise it just reminds me that we will never have Star Trek or writing like this ever again. I loved all five of those series and to compare those to the Star Trek we have today it’s not even a comparison. I know I can go back and enjoy those shows, but it would be greatto be able to have great Star Trek again today. Between Star Trek and Star Wars TV shows today I know we will never have great writing like that again.
Fun note- no one refers to mirror-Jadzia as Dax, except Sisko. All things considered about how the universe works, joining and symbionts is likely non-existent. She actually stares at him blankly when he calls her that, and it probably tipped his hand. Additionally, even though writers hadn't worked out the genetic modification plotline for Bashir at that point, mirror-Bashir is consistent with an unaltered Jules.
56:16 to get nitpicky we learned Taim was Garak's father in The Wire, and the 2parter where Taim leads the Obsidian Order fleet to their doom, it was just buried in 37 layers of subtext until it was confirmed in the prison camp.
IDK I love deep space nine but Cicso's acting is sooooo off to me. Giving me Keanu levels of emotion, hes easily my least favorite in the show. (pls dont kill me)
it is more likly they created thre bajprians than are descendants as descedants would make them linear
Have Dax and Lirara on my download 2. Word. Sexy.
True
Why does Zial age so quickly?
Ah yes… The circle, whom I used to always call the circle jerks. Because I am nothing if not extremely creative and original
I disagree sbout THE MUSE! AS 80's kid, I grew up watching Meg Foster in movies and I thought her role as a seductive, "creative energy vampire" was actually pretty cool😅😅😅
lame
The Tendi skits getting wild now! Hahaha love it!
here to inform you that your commander has been detained for questioning by the Dominion."
"Detained? For how long?"
"Indefinitely. Commander Sisko will serve as an example of what happens to anyone who interferes with the Dominion."
"What kind of interference are you talking about?"
"Coming through the Anomaly is interference enough. Unless you wish to continue to offend the Dominion, I suggest you stay on your side of the Galaxy."
"
Lots of mistakes you didn't catch😅
"It's a faaaake!"
"I created it and IT'S REAL! Don't you understand?! IT IS REAL!"
I don't much care for your move along home hate. Second shap, motherfucker
The characters in DS9 grew. Sisko became more than an officer and a father, Jake grew up, Odo became caring and vulnerable, Kira learned not to hate so much, Dax became sarcastic, Bashir learned humility, and Quark grew a conscience, Worf learned to love. Only O’Brien remained unchanged because he was already pretty rounded. And that’s just the main cast. All those reoccurring characters became so much more.
If you think about the rest of Trek what other really developed? The Doctor, Seven of Nine, beyond that the other characters are pretty static.
1:12:19 – I have to say, as much as i love DS9: while this episode might(!) have some good intentions, most of it is horrific misogynistic garbage and the treatment and portrayal of Quark is just…against everything that should be in a Star Trek episode, or ANY episode of anything. Doesn't make it better that it was made to look as comical as possible with stupid cartoonish musical cues here and there, while i just try not to loose my stomach's content all over my keyboard thinking about it. No, it does not play better today. If it does, anyone who said that, please step forward and tell me how. I am all for different opinions but this one doesn't fly.
Tyler: sorry man, it's not your fault. I love your content and everything. God i hate this episode so much.
DS9 is what Star Trek should've been ever since. It's funny, it's dark, it's humorous, it's dramatic, the stories explore a complex political, cultural and social landscape that struggles to find common ground with the ones of other species. The serialized story gives the universe and the characters depth. Too bad Voyager sort of tried to replicate DS9 and keep the TNG flavor at the same time and the result was shallow stories of Voyager being brought to its knees, only for them to reset to square 1 at the end of it. (such as the year of hell – what is the point of having the crew go through all that only for them to be reset as if nothing ever happened? waste of screentime)
I really do love DS9, but ultimately it's my second favorite Trek series. I just can't rate it above TNG.
not having the best line in star trek history in this is cringe
obviously that line being "he was more than a hero, he was a union man."
Star Trek DS9 is as close to Star Wars as Star Trek will ever get! That's a good thing! The Best Trek Ever!
I know it's a big retrospective – but some notes –
I feel that Armageddon Game isn't as one note (I think that's the terminology that you used) even including Julian's foot fetish – because thats the episode that launched Miles & Julians' friendship which was utterly amazing (especially because MIles could not stand him before that). I do think Paradise as well – is a very strong episode as well. but admittedly each their own.
I am really surprised you didn't mention "Change of Heart" (again long retrospective, so i understand) but this was the episode where Worf receives a formal reprimand (basically ensuring that he'd never get a command on his own – which a lot of people speculated why it was easier for him to leave Starfleet and become an ambassador for the Klingon Homeworld. it's also the episode where Dax almost dies. – and then you know. 9 episodes later she's basically "choked" to death by Dukat & the Pah Wraiths . a LOT of fans at the time – and even including now. stated that it would have made more sense to simply have Dax die ON THIS MISSION because it would have "meant" more than her senseless death in the finale and even give more weight to the tensions between Ezri and Worf because it's not just because Ezri is NOT Dax. but it's the fact that Worf could not save his wife because of The mission and he has to get over that. it was really a missed opportunity).
Statistical Probabilities/Chryslis. – i mean each their own. They aren't my favouritest episodes on the planet but i don't think i would deem this "most unwatchable" either. but again. we all have what we like & don't like. I like these episodes, because it was truly the first time we could see Julian BE HIMSELF in all of his enhanced glory, and I think the episodes also showed how ALONE he must really be/and feel. which – puts a light on his attitude/behaviour on the previous 4.5 seasons until his secret came out. (I know that him being biologically altered was never an idea from day 1, but the writers were JUST THAT GOOD to make it all seamlessly fit. It also gave us that beautiful quarter of Do Re Me which was just. awesome).
Also in the Reckoning – not only was Winn JEALOUS that she didn't/never heard the Prophets. but she was jealous of Sisko's FAITH. the battle between Prophet Kira (who had stated that she wanted to be the vessel and was okay with the circumstances) – vs Jake (taken over by the Pah Wraiths who obviously had NO say in the matter) was destroying the ship but the crew had a thing that allowed them to hurt the Prophet/Pah Wraith. Odo was against it (because it was against Kira's wishes) and Sisko was at peace with what happened because he KNEW/FELT that somehow the Prophets would protect Jake. (and this battle HAD to happen since it was prophised – to ensure peace/safety to Bajor). So when the station was being evacuated, Winn doubled back and released the gas that stopped the battle (and basically ensuring that the events of the Finale Happened with Dukat (Pah Wraith) vs. Ben (the Prophet). pretty cool stuff!! (and this was also the episode i am fairly certain Kira told Winn to just stop being the Kai and maybe she'd find peace and Winn was like piss offf Child LOL).
Someone on GameFAQs once summed up Deep Space Nine with the immortal words of Senator Verenek from 'In the Pale Moonlight' – "It's a faaaaake!" Yet, I think some words from Captain Sisko from that very same episode are more appropriate; "Better. They seem more real."
It didn't, that title goes to Voyager. Fight me.
While it is interesting in 2024 to look at "Past Tense" and notice the social similarities to the big ghettos we seem to have in every city in North America and Europe now, what I find even more interesting is the differences. What did the Star Trek writers in 1995 think that the problems in 2024 could be, and what are the actual problems now?
In the episode, the problem is largely just that there is lots of unemployment and the government appears either unwilling or unable to do anything about that, and also the government walled off those districts and just throws anyone who seems randomly down on their luck in there. Also, there's this idea that the people outside of those ghettos don't actually have any idea how bad they are.
Meanwhile here in reality, our governments aren't going "ok, this is where we'll put the city's ghetto district, and we'll just throw all the bums in there" – the people living in the tent cities are just organically deciding where they're going to aggregate. And what was completely missed in the episode is the reality of how much addiction and mental health has to do with the tent cities and skid rows. Modern street drugs are WAY more powerful and addictive than they used to be, and are wreaking havoc on anyone with a sufficiently addictive personality who tries them or switches to them after a period of being on some prescription medications. Additionally, much of the mid to late 20th century was spent closing many of the institutions where we used to keep a lot of the severely mentally ill and severely addicted. While you can certainly criticize many of the things that happened in those institutions, it doesn't change the fact that that's where many of those people would have been in the past, and now they're on the streets – therefore that's who a big chunk of the people who live on the streets are (not just guys in worn business suits who haven't been able to get a job for a while and can no longer afford a small apartment to share with a roommate and a bus pass), at least until some of them commit a crime violent enough to be put in prison. And while you could certainly still accuse many leaders of being unwilling or unable to address some of these problems, San Francisco and California have spent 15 years and tens of billions of dollars trying things – what they did just hasn't worked.
Fuuuuggghhhk Yeah
You know, I've watched DS9 I don't know how many times as well as video essays about it… And yours shows something I hadn't thought about: there's SO much that happens throughout the series! And also, another thing: I highly doubt the writers had everything planned out but it's amazing how they always tried to tied things up with past seasons as much as they could, e.g. the prophecy about the Fire Caves in season 3… Probably just a line they threw in without that much thought when producing that particular shoe but that they later gave huge meaning to in the finale. That's why DS9 is so awesome! ❤ Thanks for this essay!
When Tyler says, "Hey guys, Tyler here," I'm like "Hey, it's Tyler there 👆."
In regards to the title, you mispelled Voyager!
For anyone thinking the Ferengi are just a cheap racist jab at zionist jews, you are dead wrong.
That title would actually go to the founders.
Maybe one of the best lines"…there all true….especially the lies."
