One more thing about that word Hosanna. I think often times we think of it as an overtly joyful word, similar to Alleluia, but when you think about what it actually means, “Lord save us,” wouldn’t it be used more when you need saving? When you are feeling guilty. Hosanna. When you are overwhelmed with all that is going on. Hosanna. When feel like you are drowning and you are just trying to keep your head above water. Hosanna. When you feel betrayed, alone, bitter. Hosanna.
When we call on him in this way, we are worshipping him as he is meant to be. A Savior. He is not someone who brings you worldly success or who guarantees your life is going to get any easier. But he has saved you from spiritual tyrants. And all that oppresses your soul.
So we worship him as Savior. Singing songs of praise and worshiping him in our hearts. We Worship him as Savior, just as they did in Jerusalem.
Matthew 21:10-11
When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, “Who is this?”
The crowds answered, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.”
Interestingly, the last time we are told the city was stirred in the gospel of Matthew was shortly after Christ was born and the Magi showed up saying, “Where is the one born king of the Jews.”
When we start treating Jesus as king and we start saying Jesus is king. Others tend to notice, and on Palm Sunday, the people of the city came up and asked, “Who is this?” They shared him with the city. And the crowds were happy to share, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth.”
