HAPPY HALLOWEEN! This video came together at the last minute but I'm really happy with it. Horror is one of those genres that I've always been uneasy with and I think that might be a relatable feeling for a lot of people out there. This video is putting together a list of games totally doable for those who want to dabble! If there's any other recommendations you have, lemme know here too!

  2. Lol I couldnt even play through silent hill 2 without help, it was so scary I couldnt move… and that was 4 years ago, so the graphics and controls were already long outdated

  3. "Name a live service game without an October event, I dare you."
Halo Infinite. It's a complete CF and yeah, not a single spooky event for the entire month, not even on Halloween.

  4. Okage Shadow King is such a hidden gem. I have it digitally on PS4.
Fun Fact: the game is literally unplayable on PS5 most of the time. I hope it gets patched at some point.

  5. I always find it funny that I can deal completely fine with horror movies, they don't scare me and I really enjoy the setting of horror per se and sometimes the underlying studies, commentaries and characters present but holy shit. You put a single game it doesn't even need to be horror, just a single segment where it's supposed to be creepy and anxiety indulcing and I'm fucking panicking. I think there is something with the idea of interactivity or control and the limitation of it due to the horror elements that just gets under my skin. A film almost always will have the same outcome, I'm just an spectator but the game I'm actively part of it.

  6. It was only released in PAL territories in the west, but I'd highly recommend checking out Gregory Horror Show on the PS2. Its essentially a kid friendly version of Clock Tower and is such a charming little adventure with many memorable characters.

  7. I've recently been playing another game that would fit right in on this list by the name of OBAKEIDORO on Switch, it got ported to steam recently as Bail or Jail and the best way to explain it is "kid friendly Dead by Daylight"… or just, "Halloween themed Cops and Robbers" I guess… 3 humans have to evade a monster for 3 minutes with only a lantern and their wits to keep them safe, good luck. It has a Nightmare Before Christmas look to it and even features Alucard and Leon Belmont as free DLC characters. There's nothing more hilarious than watching the great dhampir Alucard just get thrown like a football by a werewolf. There's a free trial for it on Switch if you have EP+ and there's a demo on Steam to try it out if you want.

  8. I think A Plague Tale: Innocence and A Plague Tale: Requiem would fit on this list. They're definitely worth checking out if you're looking for a "survival horror-lite" type of game. Think "The Last of Us" but in Medieval Europe with rats instead of zombies.

  9. For me, horror games and movies aren't too scary, but are often too boring. Movies usually have some meaningless background plot that just exist to have the characters interact with the scary stuff, and some games do that too. Games specifically tend to turn into tedious fetch quests as the player moves from point to point like a haunted house line. Certain games are either so easy I never feel that I'm in any danger, or so hard that the fear of getting caught wears off as it just means waiting to respond at the last checkpoint in a few seconds. If the scariest thing is having to redo tedious gameplay for 10 minutes then maybe there's an issue.

  10. Here's a recommendation for people who hate jumpscares but want something still absolutely terrifying: DARKWOOD
There are no jumpscares in the game. (Closest thing is getting caught by bear traps that you fail to notice.)
And yet, the atmosphere still manages to be incredibly oppressive and stressful. Highly recommended.

I also want to recommend Silent Hill 2, for those easily scared.
There's literally only 3 jumpscares in the entire game: One in the top floor of the hospital, one in the bottom floor of the hospital, and one in the bathroom of Toluca Prison.
I think that is manageable for anyone. If you're still unsure, just look online where those 3 jumpscares happen and prepare yourself ahead of them.
Silent Hill 2 has a fantastic story, sound design and atmosphere, and the controls are a lot better than Silent Hill 1 and the PS1 Resident Evil games.
It is something every gamer should experience at least once.

  11. As someone who's on the opposite side of the spectrum I, of course, completely misunderstood the title
It's barely possible to scare me, so horror movies are stupid for me, horror books are boring and in horror games I only care about gameplay and story, which is not always there in horror games
As example Resident evil 6 for me is a good game, because it has a great combat, when RE 7 is a boring AF POC

  12. Speaking of the C64 there have been few other attempts to create horror-ish experience.

The European version of the Aliens was released in 1986. Gameplay was a mix of exploring with first person shooter elements and limited ammo. Most interesting about this game is that the player controls the whole team, but only one the same time. Unfortunatelly the game did not age well.
The US-version of Aliens is more like a combination of various minigames. It is a better game than the European version, but never was scary in any way.

Project Firestart by Dynamix was released in 1989. It is actually quite close to later survival horror games gameplay-wise, even though slow paced (even for Alone-in-the-Dark standards).

  13. Myself and a friend were actually super into Okage: Shadow King as kids, but only got to finish it when I was older. Got stuck on the Vampire boss, and then was able to borrow my friend's copy years later to finally see the ending. The story of the Turtle and the Pebble always comes back to me here and there.

Also funny enough was a big fan of Fragile Dreams. When you mentioned a flashlight and being on the Wii, I instantly knew what the game was. The heartfelt connection then loss of companions, the subtle stories lost to time like you would see for the weapon descriptions in Nier Automata, and just how different it was compared to other eerie games I had played before really got it a nice cozy home somewhere in my mind. Glad to go down memory lane with a few titles.

  14. Of course Fnaf is not "kid horror", at least it did not start that way, the main plot is a killer killing children and putting them into the animatronic suits to hide them, and that's why they are haunted, heck in Fnaf Sister Location you see two hanged bodies, only see the silhouettes of them as they are behind a stage curtain, but its still a thing, a child of course can play them as they are simple to understand, but I do not think Fnaf is child friendly when it comes to the story

  15. I'd like to believe that Yokai Watch is a horror game in a weird way. Instead of the folklore it's loosely based on, it's more of the annoying overpowered enemies at random times. It's the humiliation of being curb stomped for no reason other than crossing a crosswalk, and soon it becomes dread of said curb stomp looming over you.

  16. I would also personally put the Thief trilogy in the mix. The atmosphere in those games is on point and the stealth mechanics are amazing even years later
