I wouldn't have made up a story. I would have told them that the manager took it and ate it even though I put a note on it that said it was for a customer and not to eat it.
Since when does signing an HOA contract mean you “sign your rights away?” Yea they need shut down big time and investigated.

In regards to back pay in the US you don't necessarily have to hire a lawyer you can also contact the Department of Labor or similar at the state level and file a claim
First story, you don't need money for lawyers when you're going after a company concerning paycheck fraud and pay stub and pay infringement they actually provide you the state provides you with an attorney from the labor board it costs you nothing so that whole BS excuse of will we didn't want to sue them because we didn't have money blah blah blah ya no I don't believe your story now because you don't need money for a lawyer for a suit like that, and even in a weird case where maybe you did I'm sure that there are lawyers that would just literally sell their own mothers for a slam dunk case like that for a class action lawsuit and you know they don't get paid unless you get paid type BS but yeah no I don't believe a word of that story now or the OP was just a really really stupid person
