  1. Love your channel and great advise Dixie! I'm a nurse, biologist and former lab manager at an allergy company. My best guess as to the cause of many of your problems is an allergic hypersensitivity caused by the off gassing of all that great new gear and clothing you're always using and living in. Those synthetic materials, especially when new, give off alot of VOCs and you have an abnormally high exposure due to your awesome lifestyle and career. You could try the various washing, airing and sunning techniques to reduce them and maybe some trips with your oldest and most natural stuff. I'd also try reducing your exposure to all artificial chemicals as much as possible, in food as well as cosmetics, clothing, materials, environment etc… Wishing you the best!

  2. When was the last time you were tested for Lyme disease? It can cause autoimmune and neurological symptoms which can occasionally cause sleep apnea.

  3. You know what's interesting to me. I began getting a rash after I started working out. I hadn't changed anything in my diet, my soap, clothing, nothing. I would shower after a workout and change clothes and I kept getting this rash. I stopped eating bread, I started eating lactose-free milk, I stopped eating sugar, stopped all wheat products and the rash would come and go.

Finally, I decided to change soap (even though it was the same damn soap I had been using for ever). My rash has gone away and it hasn't come back. In fact, I introduced regular milk back into my diet (although Organic non-homogenized milk) and I haven't gotten the rash back. My rash was in a different area but look very similar to yours. I would get it on my forehead for some reason.

I went to the Doctor and she thought it was a fungal infection (IE like Athlete's foot or Jock Itch), although why was I getting it on my forehead (I don't and didn't wear a hat while working out). Now, I don't know if I suddenly became allergic to the soap I used to use or if the soap changed something. All I know is that when I went to a true Castile soap the rash went away and it isn't any of the ones you can easily find either (my wife did all the research). It's one made in Palestine somewhere and it's cheap and its made with Olive oil, water, Sodium Chloride and Sodium Hydroxide.

The Brand I use is called Two Keys ("Muftahein") and you can find it in Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Toukan-Keys-Muftahein-Olive-Nablus/dp/B07BHKNKZ9
If you don't want to try that brand I recommend a different brand. I don't know if that's what's causing your issue, but it's worth a try.

  4. Rashes come with auto immune diseases. My daughter had rashes come and go, had mono, still has things pop up. The sun is so strong, I literally hide from it. Wear a wide brim hat. You have a great channel.

  5. Hi Dixie, how will you manage battery for your cpap? Because cpap is not cool to transport in your backpack, but dealing with short span battery seems the worst problem about sleep apnea in backpacker…

  6. I actually use a Bi-PAP, the high strength variant of your CPAP. Trust me, you will get used to it.
And that brings me to this point, I'm extremely interested to see how that goes for you on trail. It's an obstacle for me, because I do not sleep well at all at this point without it. I'd be very interested in a video about how you handle your newfound sleep apnea on trail.

  7. Hey Dixie, I am really frustrated for you right now. Having 'stuff' and no answers is hard. And right now you are dealing with a lot of s@*T so be gentle with yourself and own your frustrations. I have read quite a bit of Mark Hymen (functional medicine author and MD) and really like what he has to say about food as medicine. If I were a bettin' woman I would bet he would love to work with you even if remotely. I have no stake in the game and he doesn't even know I exist but he has done his homework and a lot of research. Good luck as you play detective…….. Keep us posted…….. and as always. Happy Trails.

  8. Hello, Dixie! Getting a cpap was literally a life changing experience for me. Finding good information on the best way to take one backpacking has been a challenge. I’m really looking forward to how you integrate one into your adventures.

  9. I had a scenario where I would break out like what you experienced on your legs. The dermatologist called it a form of photosensitivity issue, where my skin would react to the sun during the first weeks of getting out into the sun each year after being inside during the winter. He prescribed a foam (mousse-like) and I would spray a handful and spread it on my arms, etc. It helped. Maybe what you have is something similar. I don't have that issue now, but I'm not out in the sun as much.

  10. I used to have MANY of the same strange autoimmune symptoms you have been having, including breathing problems, and after much of the same trials and tribulations, it turned out to be from the birth control medication I was taking to control chronic ovarian cysts. Turns out that millions of women develop all sorts of autoimmune symptoms from artificial hormones. There's tons of research about it, but oddly most doctors know nothing about it. Just thought I'd share in case it's relevant to you. Keep up the great work out there!

  11. Dixie, if you want to live to be 100, sign up for a health insurance policy. That way, you can get yearly physicals and bloodwork as needed and if something catastrophic does come up (I know, no one wants to hear this), you will be covered. I am a 72 year old on a Medicare Advantage plan and my insurance company is constantly encouraging me to get preventive care and health screenings.
