Has Russia finally upped its game in the war with Ukraine? | Sitrep podcast

With reports of an improvement in Russian battlefield tactics, that certainly could be the case. But, other intel suggests that the difficulties with enforcing discipline amongst junior ranks is actually worsening.

On this weekโ€™s Sitrep, Professor Michael Clarke will look at a new report which suggests Moscow has indeed, learned from its mistakes and is preparing a major Ukrainian offensive.

Also, as Russia changes tactics weโ€™ll hear how high-tech satellite imagery has become a vital tool for watching Russian forces in real time and discover whoโ€™s using that information.

As the RAF takes delivery of its latest and last A400M transport plane, weโ€™ll look at how it compares with the Hercules C130-J which itโ€™s replacing.

And, itโ€™s an exclusive club, but whatโ€™s it actually like being ejected from a fighter jet travelling at hundreds of miles an hour? Weโ€™ll hear firsthand from former RAF navigator John Nichol.

00:00 โ€“ On this Sitrep episode
06:27 โ€“ Russian defence imagery with Stu Ray from McKenzie Intelligence
14:06 โ€“ Hercules retirement and A400M capability
21:12 โ€“ New book from ex-RAF navigator John Nichol

  2. As a young man i bought a book titled STUMBLING BEAR. It was an analysis of Russian military performance in Afghanistan. If anything the Russian army is worse now than then and they were shockingly bad then, (worse even than our more recent efforts in that theatre). I think the world has had a peek behind the once iron curtains real military power and realised that the nuclear threat is all that country has.

  3. If up, you mean nuclear movements? He said that a while ago. Remember? That if we didn't let him destroy Ukraine, he was going to Nuke everybody… so why should anybody be shocked or surprised that the madman is moving fwd in his threat rhetoric. Now Putin took it to Belarus.

  5. โ€œFinally upped its gameโ€ are you hoping for that outcome; have you been waiting for it?

I think your choice of words, given what you represent was a bit poor here, to me it suggests itโ€™s the outcome youโ€™ve been awaiting ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

  6. At some level removing the regime in Russia is the way. That can only be done with Russian Support , if that support is for Neo Nazi help then agree it is not the way to show progressive change in Russia. However turning those Russian Troops into anti Putin activists is . The coup which failed against Yeltsin, did not stop the Soviet minded elite from through Putin re establishing the repressive measures and anti western enmity. However the greedy culture of western Capitalism and grasping tighter to it as a virtue has not helped settle the have and have not political struggle, against a background of global population movement and monetary exploitation in the end conflict , famine and misery is a consequence . Bunker builders and Castles in the sky for the elites wanting to grasp every ounce of wealth and shut away in comfort, while all around turns to death.

  7. Russia, still can't get past it's own self-belief, they have learned little,. We still need the C130 and will always need a few. We really lack in ground support, a few AC130Js would seriously make the UK Military extra potent. We simply aren't quick and effective enough. If we can fight a battle in the same time frame and ferocity as the Battle of Khasham Oil Fields in Syria, then I would argue we're in the right place. But we can't. Hell, we're a nation of 64 million, we invented the MBT and yet we only have 200 of them… we're in sad shape and we need to do better.

  12. The "up its game" thing as silly. As John Bolton has said repeatedly for the past year, since when do you play your second string when you are losing? Where is the Russian first string? Dead. Killed off in the first few weeks of the war, when the Russians went "all out" to take over all of Ukraine. They failed. Spectacularly. The whole world witnessed this.
