Harvey Guillen (What We Do in the Shadows) joins us this week to share his journey going from growing up in poverty, collecting cans to fund his pursuit of acting, to landing a hit role in What We Do in the Shadows.

Harvey talks about the love and support he received from his family during this pursuit and talks about what it was like coming out to his mother who already had her suspicions.

Such a packed episode this week. We also talk about his Metro PCS ads being the pinnacle of his success to his family, what it’s like having half of the WWDITS episodes improved, and how ‘strikes’ against him early in his career are now his strengths in this industry.

  1. I love What We Do in the Shaddows. I'd never seen him in anything else (unlike the rest of the cast but i am in the UK, so i guess that's why) but he's fantastic & i'll be watching out for him from now on.
I totally related to the whole relationship discussion. I could NOT share my space with someone else full-time, no matter how much i loved them. It would literally drive me insane & they'd end up burried in the back garden.

  3. Great interview! I listened on the podcast but wanted to drop a comment over here. We love WWDITS the movie and the show. It’s just brilliant and Guillen brings so much to it. You are the greatest and an inspiration to anyone outside of any norm. I love hearing about your persistence and hard work. As Buffy fans we loved your turn into the new Slayer! The podcast is great too!

  4. I believe his very first convention was in Spookala in Florida and just like in this interview, Harvey was just had so much energy and great interaction with fans. Also the Intro song for What We Do In The Shadows is so damn good

  5. I met Harvey on Saturday at NYCC. I will tell this story to anyone who'll listen because he deserves all the praise he receives. What We Do In The Shadows is my comfort show. My dad has cancer and it can be hard sometimes. I told Harvey how much the show meant to me when I need an escape and accidentally started crying. Without hesitation, Harvey held my hands, looked me right in the eyes and comforted me. He said he was so glad I could bring him peace and wished my Dad well. The photo op area went down for a bit and we talked there too. Don't stop being you!! -Kristi, your birthday twin from NYCC

  7. Just by listening to Harvey you can tell what a loving and kind hearted soul He is. He is correct about San Diego comic con it is very expensive everything here in California is. The price you pay to go to The San Diego comic con for 4 days, cost almost the same for the Disneyland pass for the whole year. I so much understand Harvey being poor as a child and also his parents. I been on both side of the track as a child wanted to do stuff like other kids and starting to work at 12 doing paper outs and help elderly people until 15 working at Winchell‘s donuts and arcade.I remember collecting cans and bottles, when I was little to go to Disneyland on the weekends with my friends and paying 5.00 to get in. I also collected bottle and cans back in 2007 a school helps me and my sister by letting us collect the bottles and cans not fun going through trash and dumpsters. That helped me and my sister with funeral cost for our parents and a attorney for my special-needs sister. I won’t take charity I always worked hard for what we have and my dad taught me not to take handouts. But I did learn it ok to get help once in awhile. Sound like Harvey has loving parents that support him that is awesome. You should always show that kind of support for your children no matter what and stand by them and help them and Guide them in making choices and help them grow into a successful life. Not ever child has that kind of loving environment like myself I came from a dysfunctional family. The children are the future on making this World a better place

  8. Not great parenting if u allow ur son at 6 yrs old to go out collecting tin cans. Or he is just exaggerating and he was really about 12 yrs old no parent would allow a 6 year old walk the streets in America.

  9. I really like Harvey, he is just so sweet and I love the way he tells stories, he makes them so easy to visualise. At around the 40 min mark I found myself saying "yes, abso-fucking-lutely" at the tv because the pair of you hit the nail on the head. I find when people want to be in a relationship where we are not independent of one another, I feel stifled, controlled and trapped. I like to do my own thing. When I am with someone, I love the bones of that person but I can't be doing with neediness. I have tried to be in one of those types of relationships but it doesn't work for me, puts me off and makes me happy to be single. Harvey's friend, Nicole says exactly what I have always said so I am glad I'm not the only one who thinks it. More people need to be like Me, Harvey, Rosey and Nicole 🤔😁

I enjoyed this interview very much, it was one of my favourites that I have seen in a few weeks. 😊

  10. I've been to one of William Shatner's panels, and I believe that he does them just to stay active. He is constantly doing something whether its a guest spot on a show, appearances at cons, racing horses. He just loves being active

  11. I watched WWDITS at the cinema and was so hyped for the tv show but disappointed when i realised it would be based in America with a new cast. It didn't take me long to become hooked with its great writing and interesting characters and I have watched every episode. Hearing Michael auditioned for Nandor was surprising, but I can't imagine anyone else replacing the actors on the show.
A great interview with interesting stories and Harvey deserves all the success he has achieved. I didn't even realise he was in The Magicians; Q was my favourite character and I'm now wondering if the actor left the show because of the all the drama.

  12. What a lovely episode, Harvey seems so warm, gentle, genuine and full of love. The way he talks about his mum and dad and his upbringing is so touching, and it is so sweet of him to want to do as many cons as possible, because he understands that not everyone can afford to travel, so generous. I knew I was going to enjoy this one, I absolutely love Harvey! Thanks Rosey and Ryan, and thank you Harvey for being an absolute gem of a human ❤
