I think the mimic is actually answering Schaeffers question. It repeats one of his questions back to him and then talks about how it's free. Does this imply that the mimic is intelligent in some way?

This thing is just repeating Schaeffer's questions back to him, but also says a bunch of other computing terms that it didn't hear from Schaeffer.
If it is just repeating things it heard then that means that it likely spoke with the Warden at some point.
