  1. I guess it's worth noting the reason for these articles to even exist – it's to garner clicks from users. If they throw in the word 'Pokemon' in their title / article, they are 10x more likely to keep a vested interested from people who know nothing about Monster Taming titles outside of Pokemon AND they'd gain clicks from people who want to read how bad their article is.

  2. Pokemon clone simply isn't an insult is your confusion. It's no different that the years and years FPS got called doom clone or metroidvania, it's just what they call the genre. Cassette Beasts and Temtem definitely fit that genre, Bugsnax doesn't… like at all, that's a terrible one XD

  3. I prefer the terms Pokémon like or inspired then Pokemon clone. That goes for every game that is that inspiration or like to other game in different franchises. Anything clone has a negative influence on other games. Even though term game clones to other franchises do exist as well just as games can be inspired by, take influence, or/and game like. I never really used Pokémon clone or game clone to anything in the gaming industry. Just like when people thought genshin impact were saying that it was a clone for Zelda breath of the wild using some of the mechanics of that game, I was thinking genshin impact took inspiration from Zelda breath of the wild with the mechanics and some the things that happened in the world of genshin impact. I may not like yokai watch or tem tem, but they aren’t pokemon clones. They play different than pokemon and are different than it. Back in the day, there were some people that said halo was a doom clone. Or something similar like that. But eventually that changed.

  4. As a former employee of Bleeding Cool, a rival news site to GameRant, I can confidently say that they’re calling it a Pokémon clone strictly to get hits. Furthermore, the writing is shoddy in this article and that’s to fill out a word count. You have every right to be angry at the author.

  5. Nexomon, Temtem and Coromon are definitely 100% unquestionably clones but that's about it. For those who say the word clone is too strong; Stamina etc. is not enough to significantly change anything. You have 6 monsters with 4 moves, switch out on type advantage, etc. etc. It's exactly the same game. The /core/ mechanics are identical. If minor novelties make them unique, then you could say every pokemon gen is a different game because of the minor mechanics, type chart and status changes, openworld vs. linear etc.

  6. I really liked this sort of meta video about the genre without any focus on a particular game. I found it insightful and it let your wisdom about the genre and games shine through which is why I like to watch your content.

  7. I love pokemon, but I'm sick of people putting it on a pedestal. I don't think pokemon in the current state deserves that much praise, especially when there are better rpgs that don't look and run as badly as pokemon. I hope that people will stop using that term pokemon clone. Also, I think you should try playing bugsnax, it's a really fun game. It's not an rpg at all, and I'm not sure why they put it on that list.

  8. I think creature collecting is a better way to sum up the genre than monster tamer considering you don't tame monsters is a lot of the games in the genre. It's just a broader term that helps people get a better idea for what the games might entail.

Also even though I agree with your points because pokemon barely does them, pokemon games do have some farming and fusion mechanics in a couple of their games.

  9. I read one of these articles about “Pokémon clones” on gamerant and cassette beasts was on there and I was willing to Commit Violence (plus they misspelled “beasts”

Also Bugsnax is a banger ADVENTURE game, you don’t even battle with the Bugsnax ffs

  10. The writer is probably just attempting to pull in as many viewers to the article as possible. And "Pokémon-like" is still probably considered a more acknowledgeable term then the more accurate "Monster-Taming". Although personally, the way recent Pokémon games have been going… "Pokémon-like" is starting to become a derogatory naming association for Monster-Taming games.

  11. I actually prefer 'Creature Collector' over 'Monster Tamer'. Not all of the games feature monsters – they feature fantasy creatures – and they're not always taming either, some are farming, negotiating, etc. 'Creature Collector' is just more accurate, plus the alliteration makes it more catchy to say. 'Monster Tamer' is actually very phonetically challenging.

  12. The most I can think if with Cassete Beasts is the fact that it has a proper type chart, which most RPGs don't have (Like a specific "X beats Y, Y beats Z, etc." type of thing. Most just have some enemies be weak to certain elements without having a proper "type" of their own).

Aside from that (And I guess the bootleg system, tho that's different enough from shinies that I dont think it really counts), I've got nothing.

Also, come one, Suikoden?! That one isn't even a monster tamer! It just has a ton of party members. We're REALLY stretching the definition of "clone" and of the genre now, aren't we?

  13. biggest fear when they using it just for hits.

The wrong kind of crowd will go to one of the more newer titles that's monster taming but not a pokemon clone, not even close, has LOTS of good idea and implemented well only for the actual pokemon clone crowd-to be like "this game suxs, its not what i wanted!" They'll probably actively spread not good words out to everyone to actively avoid it just because it wasn't what they wanted when it wasn't meant to be completely like pokemon in the first place.

I had to laugh when they said Ark and yugioh is a pokemon clone tho

  14. Just never understood why there weren't more huge triple a games trying to replicate the pokemon formula. Just seems like nobody has even attempted hardly. Seems like the market would be saturated with them like souls games have become.

  15. Not being harsh. The game jornalists need to know that Monster Taming genre is evolving and needs to be respected. Pokemon should no longer be a franchises to be use as a pedestal for monster taming genre as lately the recent titles, Scarlet and Violet hasn't even been good with bugs, glitches and framerate issues even with a bunch of patches.

  16. SQUASH THIS BUG! I would have given that Dragon Quest came out first is First having said DQ a clone is 100% missleading and people may buy DQ then later realise that DQ came out before pokemon and those who buy via this atrociopus article, Yeah they would be in serious legal trouble with people missled and I cant find where to comment on it directly. First foremost that DQ i would slaughter Tom Bowen labling him a troll for missleading part. But then again I'd try a nice approach if I could, but theres no real direct contact. MY SOLE THOUGHT…. This is where lawsuits come in play.

  17. I’ll say this about some of these list maker guys none of them do research if they did it’s probably just reading the Wikipedia page for like five seconds and trying to word it in a way that like doesn’t make it really clear and obvious that they’re stealing someone else’s opinion

  18. Nah I don’t think they use the term in a negative sense. Like lets admit that pokemon was the game that made creature collection a genre. When you walk up to a random person and you ask them what’s creature collection games, they will probably say pokemon.

We just need better term for “an rpg with power progression centered on catching and raising creatures”.
    Mon-like? Creature-tamer? Squad-collector?

  19. Yes absolutely yes, i adore World of Final Fantasy and highly reccomend it.

And yes it does get annoying how everything is a "clone" instead of something that stads on its own.

  20. Cassette Beast is more like Persona than Pokémon 😂😂🤣🤣 and how the hell is Suikoden a Pokémon clone when it was released before the first Pokémon game which tells you Pokémon would be a clone of Suikoden.
