I grew up in a rectangle too and had discounted lunch fees. I definitely knew I was poor the first time I went to my best friend’s house in 2nd grade!

Went to a school with kids of judges and lawyers. I'll never forget when my teacher was showing us how to fill out checks and asked if anyone had questions or hadn't seen their parents writing checks before. I raised my hand and said I hadn't, she laughed and then got upset thinking I was making a joke. I told her, we don't have enough money for a bank account, we take cash and do money orders to pay our rent (not mortgage). She apologized and started crying.
