Silverjet were a UK based all business-class airline operating a small fleet of 767s from London Luton, the airline tried to bring affordable business class travel to the masses and offered services that would put regular airlines to shame including a private executive terminal at Luton, chauffeur transport and even helicopter transfers. Pioneering the “Ladies only loo” Silverjet made a lasting impression despite thier painfully short existence, this is the Silverjet Story…

I started writing this episode just minutes after completing the script for the Flyjet episode (well I was in a cabin in the woods on holiday with not much else to do) but the actual recording and putting together of the video has taken nearly an entire month mostly due to a very busy flying schedule at work. Hopefully this is worth the wait, I have had to cut large chunks out of this one to keep the run-time somewhat sensible as it was getting way too long, pretty remarkable considering they lasted less than two years…
I mention a number of airlines in this video which have previously been covered in the Grounded Series, these include;
Flyjet
A small charter airline which established a reputation as a “can-do” airline but quickly overstretched themselves ultimately skirting with bankruptcy before Silverjet acquired them to obtain their licences…

Excel Airways
Following their successful re-branding from Sabre Airways, Excel Airways would grow to become one of Europe’s largest travel companies. This episode looks at how Excel grew and how the seeds of their own destruction were sewn…

Another lovely video Phil! 🙂
Another great video! Never got to fly them myself but a few people I used to work with did (was a travel agent and they offered a £199 return concession!). Keep it up! 👍
What an excellent way to start the weekend, i'm sure this will be great
There jet painting looked like Sabena Airlines.
Phil… how about covering Dan Air or the sham failure of Air Europe??
Nice video. Can you also feature Maxjet’s story. Thank you.
Excellent Phil. Some subtle wisecracks in that story. 😂
Do you plan on perhaps expanding onto the history of more obscure existing airlines or obscure aviation incidents in the future?
Phil, this was another great one. Congrats. And these are never too long. Enjoy your spring.
You should also add to the list openskies and L'Avion
What’s your ultimate opinion on these all business airlines from the one mentioned in the video to the recent start up global airways?
Sliverjet was a interesting carrier I sort of were like a low cost budget business scheme shame they didn't last long
Great job.
Surprised you never did a Thomas Cook video like this one
No idea if there was any truth to this but American, and possibly others were accused of predatory pricing to try and force the business only carriers out of tmhe market, indeed as soon as they all collapsed American stopped their Stansted – JFK flight
