GREAT IS THE CHRIST CHILD | The Word Exposed with Cardinal Tagle (January 15, 2023)

Today is a special Sunday for Filipinos everywhere as we celebrate the Feast of the Santo Niño. In 1721 Pope Innocent XIII assigned the third Sunday of January in honor of the Christ Child. It comes with a special set of liturgical texts.

In the gospel this year Jesus proclaims: “Amen, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the Kingdom of heaven. Whoever becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven. And whoever receives one child such as this in my name receives me.”

We have just celebrated the birth of Jesus, the Son of God who humbled himself and assumed our poverty as a child. In Jesus’s birth, God teaches us what it means to become great in his kingdom. Can we humble ourselves? Can we accept God’s humility? Can we unite ourselves with the littles ones of the world?
