ok so little theory of mine is that this is the deltarune gaster and not the undertale gaster and that we just havent met the deltarune gaster.
This is what 3 years with no Chapters 3&4 does to the DR community
i mean, so far the first thing i see that explains why the tone is much more informal and less creepy than usual, both in english and japanese, it's simply because this is literally a valentine's card, so he is legittimaly trying to sound much nicer and less formal than usual. this isnt a lab report of an experiment, this isnt a series of message to make a deal with us, this isnt him gathering our answers for the first chapter survey, this is him literally just sending us his regards because it's valentine. and seeing him without his mask of formalities and coldeness…. what a goofy silly creepy dude!

About the point of not remembering who he wants to help, i think the implication is far more tragic. If all memory of gaster was erased, it's possible he doesn't remember himself, only defining himself as… him.
But he never forgets someone he doesn't remember… maybe he's aware of these, for lack of a better term, holes in his identity. Without really knowing himself, he's still a scientist, and if the points about love are genuine, it seems he's still deeply compassionate. If that's true, the desire to help himself could, ironically, be fueled by his belief he's helping someone else.
Just feels like the depressing yet hopeful message deltarune is hinting at heading towards to me
This letter matches the gaster ive believed in for years now ive always believe gaster to be a bit of a silly goober mostly because i truly enjoy the concept of him being the father of sans and papyrus it would fit very well for him to be silly i will always believe gaster to be doing everything for the greater good i believe hes still trying to help free the underground hes looking for any evidence he can for a way out

8:49 what if this letter is written by a piece of gaster that's remembering that he needed to get himself back together and thus "help" himself but since its only a piece of it him it doesnt remember? It knows it needs to help someone but doesnt remember that it's gaster. Also if this is a piece of him then helping gaster reform himself and no longer be shattered will be both helping himself (since all the pieces are gaster) but also helping someone else (the pieces are shattered and may have separate identities)
The face/coat stuff could be a reference to the two mystery sprites in Undertale (one bearing a face and one being a nondescipt coat.)
I swear I remember someone else in some obscure dialogue used the words “Good by” without the e. If this is a reoccurring thing, it could be indicative of the same person.
Also, this sounds very silly, but maybe the letter “e” is a clue of some sorts. It said that something walked away and the letter was gone. I know this sounds really stupid, but maybe it meant the literal letter e, but obviously like, not the actual “e” grew legs and walked away, but I think that since whoever wrote this letter communicates and writes in very unconventional manners, maybe it was some obscure reference to someone important who is associated with E or whose name starts with it, because the actual valentines letter disappears later. I’m really reading too much into this 😂. It just seems strange that the same “typo” would show up twice

I just had a thought what if the reason it’s ironic for the writer of the vanished Valentine to forget who they’re trying to help is because they’re the singer of Don’t Forget? (Though I always preferred either Dess and/or Asriel created the song for their siblings because it has caring older sibling energy.) It would be ironic wouldn’t it? They have a whole song about not forgetting but they still forget something as crucial as who they want to help.
