Ok, so the technology of humans is still just slightly more than our current space travel capabilities. Here are the issues with that.
1. Somehow, humans flew to an asteroid field to truly dismantle their enemy??? How???? It is currently estimated that It would take 18 months to several years to get to the asteroid belt. And I’m basing this on the way the technology in this story of humans is assumed to be, which is the current level we have today.
2. While maybe from the outside, the asteroid belt may look like it's very dense. In truth, there are millions of miles between asteroids in the asteroid belt in Our solar system. So there is no way the fight would have worked out that way. Might have been far more feasible if somehow the battle was fought in the rings of a planet. And that is just as dumb in the end, just in the opposite direction of the spectrum.
I know there are other issues, but I wanted to focus more on this aspect. It really shows how these people who write these things do no research and have a very clear lack of understanding of their own world and local Solar System. They tend to think what is shown in movies is how it actually is.
You wouldn't let them retreat. You would harry and pursue them, disabling ships to capture as many as possible. Every ship you leave today is one you fight tomorrow.
Good story.
What nonsense you would only allow one ship to survive and return to tell the tale and no commander just a few grunts.

And thanks to this little skirmish, the humans now have technology at their disposal.Through salvaging direct alien ships
