Matty Healy is known for his onstage antics and ironic performance of fame, but he’s always been somewhat guarded. On the 1975’s new album, Being Funny in a Foreign Language, he leans into sincerity in a way he’s never done before. In this wide-ranging interview, he discussed everything from the transcendent power of music to his problem with the band Oasis.

I love when he talks about the duality of him on and off stage. On stage and sometimes in interviews he gets into character but I think in real life it's just like he said: soft and quiet. I wish many more people would look at things beyond the surface before jumping to conclusions.
So real to send a message to Oasis like that 😀😊 that's why you can see that the 1975 are really brothers
Loved
Sorry, got no respect for someone who disses Depeche Mode by saying he was only influenced by their visual aesthetic and didn’t really see anything in their music. Please, the 1975 is nowhere in the same ballpark as DM with their bubble gum pop for teen girls.
Holy @#$! Cheers to the person doing the interview, so naturally invasive on a sensitive, kind, genuinely curious, level. Cheers to Matty for his authentic answers and deep thoughtful discussions. He talks of his band with such respect and comfort, loyalty, support and trust. This interview was full of mutual respect, trust , honesty and courage. I'm truly shook. I had last all hope in men until this beautiful display of kind and thoughtful discourse. Love, E
With all the crap media outlets are trying to spew about him right now, I hope this video is the one people find. He seems like a kind-hearted person with a good soul.
I can see why Taylor fall for him😊
I can listen to him talk forever
Tom Powers great interview!
“We used to be defined by what we love not what we oppose” I love that! We should get back to that!! These guys are a great band!!
Love The 1975, glad he is not single anymore. Matty is a sweetheart. Only human…
Such a good interview. You two talking about artists “unearthing” music makes me think of Gaga’s song “Sine” where she described being a channel for music ‘it comes from above’
i admire this man so much
This is matty healy ❤
Amazing hair.
Matt is a serious intellectual who's emphathetic and passionate about his art and the state of the world. Such a humble, sensitive talent. Love It If We Make It is a monster. An extraordinary moment in songwriting. So timely, powerful and needed. It's exciting to see where his creativity continues to take him with 1975. Cheers! 😊❤
listening to the 1975 while watching a matty healy interviewn amazing
It’s crazy how Matty said, “We’ve become defined by what we don’t like…we used to be defined by what we loved,” and on the last track of Taylor Swift’s album Lover, she says, “I want to be defined by the things I love…” 🤯
Maybe I'm delusional but I think Matty mentioned Taylor's vocal note in Daylight… is that a coincidence? I don't think… he is so damn smart 😊
Can we make this viral and show em how brilliant is this man!
Love what he says about how much he wants tickets to be $, wink wink Taylor! Having parents endebt themselves to please their kids for her and her team to get filthier rich is obscene. What a juxtaposition him dating her
“I could do a Chinese accent!”
MATTY NO
What an utter bellend.
I just hope people leave Matty alone now! Being Taylor Swift's boyfriend for a short time has exposed him to a lot of hate… he really cared about Taylor. I think all this bad press and Taylor's fans helped ruin this relationship that was just getting started. At first they were both very happy: Matty had met Taylor's family during her concerts in America, her best friends and it was getting serious. Then they came out publicly and the media backlash started, both of them were bullied only because they were together.
Edit: I don't know exactly what to think of this situation but there is something that doesn't add up to me. There's a theory going around and I'm starting to believe it too.
Matty healy should visit the dentist with all his stank teeth.
Luke Perry anyone!?
18:19 – 20:00 is when Matty explained how he's always in character during the shows but in real life, he's not actually like that. My heart hurts seeing comments trying to hurt him. 🙁
I so enjoyed listening to Matty's sincerity here.
So refreshing to listen to a young pop star be so open about his real feelings and thoughts, not trying to win popularity, or shy to speak his passion for music, especially when he brings up when something bigger than the artist takes over and a song transcends the listener to feel something they needed brought out. So free and articulate.
He gives his points of view openly, one can disagree, which makes opportunity for good discussion.
43:15
This guy who thinks it's cool to sing badly while drunk at a concert is lame.
I totally get it….as someone who knew nothing about him or the band, I realize just how dumb people are. He isn’t any of the things the media (swiftie generated) portray. Glad I did my own investigation! Love him.
42:00 what an amazing quote about Oasis!
Absolutely lovely 😌😌😌
my favourite song ever was written in 90 minutes in LA when everyone was high… i did not expect that
I feel like he’s hard to follow sometimes. Almost like he can’t complete a thought.
this host is rude
What's astounding to me was I had this very same conversation with an close friend today and about how culture has become obsessed with what we don't like.
It was in direct response to everyone's reaction to Matty's appearance on Cumtown.
Just really agitated me because you listen to all the material, oh Caroline, love it if we made it and they try and put Matt on a Funeral pyre about it just felt really wrong.
Matt is a messenger of the culture right now,1975 don't deserve that, they're doing God's work!
I watched the interview and I liked him so much that I got my ear pierced.
I'll see you on Halloween, Matty!!!!
21:00 but then he went and dated taylor 💀
38:32 i left finsbury park with that exact thought and have since picked up my guitar again
i literally cant explain the way this video has made me feel, i feel like ive had some wort of philosophical awakening????????
hands down one of my favourite matty interviews. sincerity was a big chunk of their conversation and it showed both ways. Tom ( i hope im getting the name right) going “what?” when matty stopped halfway through finishing his thought won me over so so quick. need more of these.
I’ve been a fan from the start & always loved the way Matty’s mind works. Can’t wait to see them for the 4th time in October!!
First time listening to Q with Tom Power. I loved this interview with Matty. Also, loved the interviewer Tom Power. Thank you so much! Yes, I just subscribed. ❤
I can’t stand this man, he talks loud but has absolutely nothing to say, history is not going to favourably remember the 1975 lol, a band only listened to by 14 year olds and people with mental disabilities .
