‘Free and fair' ocean trade now ‘contested’ at times by China: UK First Sea Lord

Royal Navy First Sea Lord Admiral Sir Benjamin Key says “free and fair trade” in oceans is being “contested” by countries like China.

Admiral Sir Key said he “noted with interest” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s comments about wanting a constructive relationship with China where Australia can, but to be confident in disagreeing with them when it was in Australia’s national interest.

“I would look at what’s going on in the South China Sea and China’s behaviours there as being something where we should confidently disagree with them,” Admiral Sir Key told Sky News Australia.

“We have established over time a clear rules-based international system that underpins through the United Nations Convention for Law on the Sea, how nations can operate on the high seas and we do not necessarily agree with the lines that all nations.

“Those high seas should be open for the free and fair trade of everybody and, at times, that is now being contested.”

  1. Forty percent of Maritime freight is fossil fuel, and one large container ship, in one year creates the emissions of 50.000.000 cars. Perhaps all countries with natural resources should go back to making their own stuff.

  2. Rule based China never stop any commercial ships that sail international water where freedom of navigation is always welcome without violations of China sovereign territorial water and air space. No problem here, China is very clear here.

  3. The best defense against communist authoritarian dictatorship is to strengthen democracies from corrupting influences and nepotism. It takes an active and concerted effort of the people, to ensure that our democratically elected politicians are truly representing our interests.

We must also address what hostile communist countries are doing, both domestically and abroad. Democratic Nations must stand together against their lawlessness in defense of global security, human rights, and enforce International Law.
