‘Fort Fumble’: Canberra fails to provide Australia with armed drones

There is no branch of the Australian Defence Force that has an armed drone, says The Australian’s Foreign Editor Greg Sheridan.

“Neither the Air Force, nor the Navy, nor the Army, nor even the civilian boffins who has access to an armed drone,” Mr Sheridan told Sky News host Peta Credlin.

“Everybody is acquiring drones, except ‘Fort Fumble’ in Canberra, where we don’t have a single drone.

“We spend $50 billion a year on defence.

“I don’t think there’s a country on God’s green Earth that spends its defence dollars more ineffectively than we do.”

  1. The state of our military is an absolute disgrace. No drone capabilities at all! At this rate, I would not be surprised if the government doesn’t completely outsource the military out of sheer incompetence.

  2. And its only just occurred to Sky. Our military has been under equipped for at least 20 years. But all of a sudden, its Labors fault. Last I heard we were exporting our hardware to Ukraine, drones, drone killers and bushmasters to name just a few. But Credlin wont mention that.

  3. As for Cadets, I looked at signing my son up, when I got on to the local unit website and it said they were full. The problem with recruitment seem to lag the time time to get in. Once you sign up you should be in within 3 months.

  4. MQ-28 GHOST BAT can shoot rown dozens of drones…we have 10 built un Australia upto July 2023 …thise 10 were built after 3 prototypes were proven .. and 20 were built in about 4 months …those 10 begin service in 2024. I have seen them flying over my house …they are real. Why are you saying we dont have drones, MQ-28 is an autonomous AI aircraft ….about the size of a lear jet with a jet propelled. It is a multirole wingman jet aircraft . We NEED 2000 OF THEM !!

  5. Didn’t we give Ukraine a whole bunch of cheap to make cardboard drones? Why the hell aren’t we using them instead? Why give another nation something if it leaves our armed forces completely devoid of the equipment given?

  6. Australia has in the last twenty years given a billion dollars to Palestine, so they have drones ,para gliders, ammunition and tens of thousands of missiles.
Sorry the socialists have made Australia as weak as we can be.

  8. I'm an ex Naval reserve cadet NRC in my last 12 months they abolished the reserve part of all existing Naval cadet units.

Before the reserve part was abolished, our officers always made sure that we never forgot that fact, and always stated that in the event of a war braking out if reserves were mobilised then we would be some of the first to be call to service.

Got to spend time on an ANZAC frig as well. I went to CERBERUS. It was a lot of fun, and I got to experience a full from.start to finish, passing out parade in full black dress uniform.

But they stopped that as well and started babying and bubble wrapping the cadets that joined as I was on my way out.

The government has been watering down potential recruit pools now for the last 20 years.

You know God forbid teenagers get trained to have respect, discipline, and instilled pride for their nation.

  9. Greg Sheridan ,if you knew what conditions exist in PNG you might think that Chinese management would be a good idea. That country is an absolute basket case and the anarchy is unbelievable.I know because I have spent time there.Port Moresby is now considered to be the 2nd most dangerous city in the world behind some banana republics city. Some Chinese hard line discipline would pull that country out of the more.
