FOR SEVERAL REASONS, I WON'T NICHE DOWN MY RESELLING BUSINESS

For some people, niching down their sourcing and selling can work very well. I think for the majority of people, this isn’t the case. It certainly isn’t for me, so I sell a little bit of everything.

  1. I totally agree with your not niching down, we have a niche, its video games, we love them, can repair them, however we live in a rural area, and I'm handicapped, I can't race through the sale to get to the games, so we buy what we can, and we sell everything we can make money on, and that we like. The model works for us.

  2. There are lots of variables what I sell: I stay away from low end, low return, low sale, low profit bulky items. I stay away from clothing, footware, and most breakables.
What I do sell are smalls. First Class stuff. Just got another lot of 122 sewing patterns today for $18 total. A lot of Vogue brand <these are usually better priced and sell faster) $15-40+ each. I also got a bag of 40+ ornate fridge magnets for $10. Listed all on Monday and $33 in sales from 2 already. Got a small box of 53 35mm cameras. Paid $50. Lots of testing to do with those. Best one is over $140, average is $35-40.
And, gotta love this: 35 HP, Canon, Lexmark toner carts for $100 cash. Done sold 6 already.

If an item takes 10 mins max all in, and you can make $10 on it… all the better. $20, 40, 100+ per sale, enough said 😀 😀

  3. I like you enjoy selling a little bit of everything, from antique to new, from the wierd to the most common items. Probably the weirdest thing I have sold was a taxidermy fisher from maybe 1950’s – 1960’s, ugliest mangiest thing I have ever seen, one of them items I just listed to get it out of my house, but I made a hell of a profit on it, 😆. Just goes to show, there are buyers that will buy just about anything. Just recently sold a set of antique ram horns and partial skull, 😆, again made a decent profit on them. Love the videos, can’t wait for the next one..

  4. "I tested this—-for a while." LOL!!
Also, I do not niche down, personally. Although I do prefer smaller items. Not actual smalls, but stuff that will fit in a box 12" or smaller, generally. I do buy larger items, but then they tend to sit around while I procrastinate on listing them since I don't like shipping larger items. 🙂

  5. The thing nobody talks about with "everything" stores is getting as much of the attributes right as possible with your listing, good photography and items/brands with a very good sell-through rate. This week I sold Hallmark Keepsake ornaments, Zippo lighters and a Brittany Spears doll among other items. There's a whole lot of 201 and 301 level stuff I really need to figure out how to do videos about that growing resellers should know without having to trial and error as much.

  7. I couldn’t agree more with you. I have no desire to niche down. I’ve been thinking about it more and more lately and like you, I would get bored. I love searching for all different types of things. But I can’t help but think about, what if I were to niche down on one thing and that thing stops being popular. What happens when people don’t want to buy gently used shoes on eBay anymore? What happens if they don’t want to buy collector cards or comic books? Then I’m stuck with a whole lot of one thing. This way I have a variety of things and my inventory is always moving. I really appreciate this video, because I feel like I am seeing more videos every day about how to find your niche and I just see so many more benefits of not finding my niche. I like that everything is my niche 🙂

  8. I niched down to clothing because it’s easiest for me to source, list and ship at scale and because clothing is recession proof. Definitely not as fun as the everything treasure hunting days but my business has seen significant improvement and I’ve been able to eliminate a lot of errors, bad buys and overall I make fewer mistakes by sticking to what I have become an expert in.

  9. @Mountain Man Treasures – Troy: I believe the Casio keyboard is in demand for the old school sound it produces. I don't remember who used them back in the day but a couple of "serious" musicians did probably for the lulz. I enjoyed this video. Despite the shaming inflicted by the hustle culture, we can only source and shape our stores around what is available in our area. What day of the week were these sales? (I'm wondering if it's what you're shipping from orders during a weekend or a 24 hour period (Tu, W, Th, or Fri).) Thx.

  10. Congratulations, Troy, on 14k subscribers! I’ve missed a day or 2 & just catching up, so not sure when this actually happened! Getting your ducks🐤🐤 in a row definitely worked! ~ Cheryl

  11. I'm with you, niching down would be boring. I love the hunt at thrift stores, estate and garage sales, friends and family. Selling small vintage and new items; mostly toys, figurines, books, etc… I like the small stuff 12" or less. Easy to store and ship. Cheers from Oregon.
