Played the game for several hours today and to be honest I found it highly disappointing. The realms are bland and boring and I had several game breaking bugs like the portals not opening. Not to mention the stupid decision to make you play the game online via their servers even if you are playing solo.
Another hyped up, unfinished, derivative game grab, streaming live soon!!
Suckers!
So, the key part of the word, "steampunk" is the "punk."
That derives from the "punk rock" of the 1970s, and its themes of alienation and rebellion against inherently oppressive social, political and economic structures (and the notion that all such structures are inherently and unavoidably oppressive).
To the punks, the only true individual freedom could be achieved through the abandonment (or destruction) of all such structures in the name of an (hopefully enlightened) anarchy. ✳
The punk rock movement appeared as economic change driven by technological innovation began to eliminate entire ways of life — usually those jobs held by blue-collar workers who lacked higher educations — while providing no support for those left behind, facing hopelessness and ruin.
To science fiction writers of the time, the struggle endured by blue collar workers paralleled — in many ways — the same profound disruptions faced by the lower classes during 19th Century industrialization — especially in the United Kingdom and other European countries that lacked the safety-valve offered by the vast unsettled areas of North America.
So, they began to write stories set in the 19th Century about those whose lives and livelihoods faced destruction in a dramatically uncaring social order driven by the desire to gain wealth and power by making soulless machinery more important than human beings.
As with any sort of "science" fiction, the authors dramatically enhanced the brutal power of both the machinery and the industrialized capitalist socio-economic order, to tell stories of courageous resistance to nigh-overwhelming oppression. 😫😣
Hence, "steampunk."
By contrast, "gaslamp" is usually a term that refers to fantasy stories that featured those who stumble into the wonder and mystery of a hidden magical part of reality — hence the term "gaslamp fantasy." 🧚 🧙♂🧝♀🧞♀
While the settings sometimes featured tremendous horror and danger, it all originated with the hidden magical world , and not with an overwhelmingly oppressive social order driven by cinematically brutal industrialization.
Since the primary themes are not some variation of "man against society," but rather "man against hidden magic"; and the stories feature settings of lyrical beauty rather than grim, grimy, soot-encrusted factory towns, the term "punk" doesn't apply. 🤔
So, while the two genres, "steampunk science fiction" and "gaslamp fantasy" are set in similar time-periods — some variation of the 19th Century — the themes of the stories and the nature of the protagonists and antagonists differ fundamentally. 😀
(The term "gaslamp" refers to lighting — streetlamps, usually, and even lighting in some better homes — fueled by methane processed from coal. The light was usually bright but had warm yellowish tones, as compared to the harshly bright blue-white electric lights.)
The biggest flaw imo, is the game claims Solo play but for some reason you have to be Online instead of having an offline mode like say Elden Ring has, which had to be my default gameplay as even with a good broadband connection Elden Ring Online play for me was in single digit fps unlike other online games I play daily. So being at the mercy of Early Access server connections isn't a fun thought. Hopefully in the future Solo play will mean Solo play.
I like the hailstone mechanic in this, it has to be a first.
Gas-lamp = no electrical inventions
I thought you might be different from EVERY other streamer streaming this game atm and go swamp or desert but NOOOO let's go standard forrest biome…………..
Been having a blast playing this so far. I'm liking the more traditional survival elements like hunger and rest as well as the fact that the environment can apply elemental related debuffs and damage to you based on the biome you are in.
Looking forward to your coverage of this in the near future!
just imagine..doing a little MJ, putting on VR glasses and playing this game…talk about the a 60's acid trip 🙂
unlike Skull and Bones, this game is coming in at a reasonable price, so i can be more forgiving of bugs and be willing to give them a chance to fix them.

Super excited about this one. I'm glad you're diving into it and giving it a try!
I stopped the vid 34 mins in because I didn't want to get spoiled anymore. Just the gameplay vid, intro, and dialogue was enough to get me to stop watching and start playing.
mary poppins 😀
