Final Fantasy II | Finale: Free the World from the Emperor of Hell
Product provided in this by Square-Enix. This is part of a collection of Final Fantasy games that I plan to cover on this channel.
And it comes to this. Welcome to the finale of Final Fantasy II.
We’re still within Pandemonium and as we get more and more rewards, we face more challenging bosses such as Astaroth, Tiamat and Beelzebub. At the end is the Emperor himself, Emperor Mateus. Mateus praises the heroes in getting this far but now the fight ends here.
Emperor Mateus doesn’t screw around. At all. He will hit you hard and fast. He packs damaging physical attacks and his magic can hurt hard especially Starfall X. Make sure that your party is at least above 4000 HP because if you don’t, one or more of your party will go down rather quickly. Take advantage of buffing your stats. Using spells such as Protect, Haste, Blink, Aura and Berserk will help. Berserk especially since you can keep buffing your attack power until you’re strong enough to take him down. Guy with his high HP would exceptionally help since he gains a lot of HP. Alternatively if you have the Blood Sword, use it. Use it if you want to be cheap and teach Emperor Mateus a lesson.
But I didn’t do that. I didn’t need it. Firion kept dying while Maria, Guy and Leon kept buffing and attacking. Guy pretty much did most of the work so he’s the MVP here.
With the Emperor defeated not once but twice, his reign of terror is over. The world above is finally free of his evil and now they can move forward and rebuild. However the price that they paid was high. So much destruction. So many sacrifices. All they can do is keep moving forward and honor their memory. Leon departs, realizing that there have been too much bad blood. But Firion assures him that he will return. As Firion, Maria and Guy head off, the spirits of those who gave their lives to end the war appear and depart for the heavens.
And with that, Final Fantasy II is over. Finished. I’ll be honest. The game has refined to the point where it can be enjoyed. However the game can be absolutely brutal. To this day, it is still considered a black sheep among the franchise. Should it stop anyone from giving this a shot? Absolutely not. Given that they implemented the boosts here, it can make things even more trivial.

And with this, that's another Final Fantasy game finished. I will be doing Final Fantasy III much later and I mean that literally. Besides, unlike FF2, FF3 is where the real fun starts with the job system. I should mention that Final Fantasy II is NOT a bad game. Sure it's different from the original Final Fantasy but it had a lot of good ideas that weren't executed properly. Thankfully the Pixel Remaster does make this tolerable. For the most part. Don't take my word for it. Try the game out for yourself. Besides, it's available on console so there's no excuse. Honestly. I only wish Dragon Quest got more love because honestly, RPGs as a genre, especially JRPGs are treated poorly. That needs to change. We reach the finale of FF2 doing the final area of the game and the final bosses in order to save the world from the inminent darkness, 2 FF finished, 4 to go, next is the hardest of all FF games ever made: FF3.
Note: The Masamune you can find it in a hidden room before battling Astaroth behind a wall.
