I am just happy we got more time with the Otis voice actor!
Zzzzzzzz
I am a grown man and I STILL lost it when I got to go on a boat ride with my boy Graha 😭
Honestly, Living Memory got me more than anything else in this game. It resonated with me insanely well. I have never cried more in any other media than this one zone, it just knew how to break me.
I adore this zone. I know some people hate it, but it hits a part of me I can't name.
I'm a Dawntrail defender, but I get why people have issues with it. It's got flaws, and it's a very different thing to what FFXIV has been for a long time which isn't necessarily everyone's cup of tea. I can UNDERSTAND why people wouldn't dig the expansion, even if I'm not with them on that.
That said… I can't comprehend how anyone can say that Dawntrail is just 100% bad, or that the new writers don't have the mojo, or that it's a worse story than ARR (All things that I've seen) when Living Memory exists. It's such a gutpunch of a zone, dude, it's so good. This one zone alone is better than all of ARR combined.
That opening 1:45 with the Lala couple 😂
"It's not really them." – But does it matter? If the effect is real, the closure, the emotion, the net positive change, if all that is real, does it matter in the end, that the source was not.
Tha gondola ride is gonna live rent free in shippers heads
It wasn't really the kid in that VR model. But the mother was real. To her, the emotions she felt, the ability to process her grief. All of that is real, and that's all that matters imo. To me, the flaw with Living Memory is that it exists for the memories – who are in themselves imo, capable of life but that's a whole other conversation – and not for the living people beyond. Imo it should be a vehicle for people to process their memories of a person, rather than a storage facility for memories to live.
Living Memory was so annoying. It leads with "Please delete us, we don't want to live if it means everyone dies" then they try SO HARD to make you feel bad. Like, let me hit the switch, I do NOT CARE. These people are not real, even if you believe in real life that there's some way to clone people and they are real etc, this isn't that. In FFXIV there is specifically a Soul and Memory. Without both, you are not you. It's very black and white here. These are machine learning holograms trained on memories of someone specific. It is a copy and facsimile and not even remotely the same person. Knowing that you're on a timer and G'raha's like "Let's eat ice cream and ride a gondola" pissed me off. Like, I love you G'raha, but what are we doing. The fate of EVERYONE on the Source is at stake. We shouldn't be dallying. This was my only issue with the expac. I wish they handled this better where instead of us deciding to stroll around and get to know the people who we're deleting, we need to deactivate safeguards or something as we explore the zone and during that time, we can get to know people.
And yes, this zone has many important scenes. Scenes I wouldn't want lost in a rework. There's just no real urgency despite being on a timer to stop interdimensional fusion
@17:52 BOI!!!! You have absolutely NO ROOM TO TALK!! You body jacked your younger self! You REWROTE TIME!! You kidnapped MULTIPLE SOULS in an attempt to kidnap ME!! All because you had a crush!!!!
If I’ll be honest, Living Memory should have been a place to give closure rather than be a false paradise. I see the use of such a place; but given the urgency and requirements to sustain it, it’s not feasible. If anything, we should be able to give the Endless closure before sending them off, as was how the natural order is intended. I’d rather send off each of them with good memories and closure rather than perpetuate a hollow afterlife. We’ve seen how well a world free of suffering ended in Endwalker. In ideal circumstances, I wish we weren’t rushed to shut it all down just to stop Sphene, but take time to send them all off before shutting it down.
Where is Skyrim?
Watching Otis suffer from PTSD was heartwrenching. You can really tell he loved Sphene and was haunted by her death.
For me, Living Memory is a prison, and a cruel one, parading around faux versions of people's memories, so for me, players that "got broke by this" sound like people upset that stolen memories are finally freed from a twisted, terrible digital mausoleum, which is difficult to understand/sympathize with, but to each their own. Totally okay for people to have different impression, but the 'toxic positivity people' that rejects any view but "this is happy, and its sad when its gone" can shove it. Sphene is the opposite of Venat. Venat was a true lover and champion of humanity. She had the courage to "birth a world of suffering to mire and plague" and suffer that "excruciating pain" of forcing us to walk because happiness is not a birthright, but something that is earned by walking hand in hand with suffering, overcoming, and striving for a future. Sphene, on the other hand, literally edits the suffering and painful memories of the (living and) dead, and with the dead props up a mockery of the person that was into this twisted existence that is absent their consent, absent the suffering that gave value to this happiness, and absent a future (as G'raha points out). Sphene is an Ascian in all but name and I regarded her and her living memory as an affront to the will of Hydaelyn and everything Venat endured for our sake, so I it was happy, not sad, for me to release these stolen memories of people that didnt get to choose from this simulacrum. Otis trying to make new happy memories for faux memory people was tragic and sad, but his line delivery was LEGENDARY and gave some amazing, unilateral agency/closure that ultimately didn't matter (he is only old memories, soon to be gone) but it was a kindness in honor of, and i loved that.
I have seen so many people say they couldn't care about this zone or the people, you can acknowledge they are not alive but at the same time feel for the potential that Living Memory could have been used for, a last goodbye and closure before they rest for good, but this whole concept got twisted by a need to save everyone. I swear there is a large amount of players who are just emotionally dead inside, people who look at emotional scenes and go "who cares". They just don't sound like rational people to me and it hurts when I see so many of them spewing hate for this expansion, because that hate isnt deserved.
This section caused PSYCHIC PAIN
(But in a good way)
I think whether you consider the inhabitants of Living Memory as 'real' or not would very much be a subject of debate, but with Cahciua mentioning that the place once saw living visitors, I get the sense that perhaps once upon a time the place had a different purpose altogether, a means to find closure with the deceased before sending them on their merry way to the great beyond, perhaps.
The question then becomes… why has the place become a playground exclusive to the Endless, while the living have their memories of the dead taken and therefore have no compulsion to even visit the twelth level anymore? I think the giant loose end that is the scientists of Presevation and their possibly warped motives would absolutely be something worth investigating.
One thing I hope to hear Jesse's take on is the seemingly underlining theme of, "What does it mean to be alive?" I feel the Endwalker saga hit on, "What it does mean to live?" However, more and more we're seeing different takes on the values of different forms of "lives" in FF14.
We can all agree things trying to murder us is bad, whether they are "full" souls like Ascians, "incomplete" souls like us such as Garleans, or "soulless" beings like arcane constructs or Endless. However, more and more the game is putting emphasis on different forms of "life." Emet didn't see us as "alive" because we weren't "full souls." We don't see the Endless as "alive" because they have no soul. However, Hermes struggled with a similar thing in Elpis where the Ancients also didn't view beings without "souls" as properly, "living." Which leads to what we see in Ultima Thule post crafter quests regarding life not living with Aether but with Dynamis. Furthermore, we know "soulless" things can, seemingly at random, gain a true soul (see the Phoenix being in Pandaemonium), an event not even Ancients truly understood but studied intensely (Emet being able to see souls, Athena researching the creation of souls to attain godhood, etc.). One thing I wonder about is, if the denizens of Living Memory were brand new entities instead of being simply "copies" due to being based off memories gained by real souls; would we have felt differently about shutting them off? Or, through similar events such as with Alpha, could Endless "randomly" gain a soul and become a "true being"?
Living Memory makes up for a lot of the weakness in this game. I imagine anyone who doesn't get is too young and lucky to understand it.
If you never lost anyone, would you ever really cherish anyone?
Jesse: I do not consider you to be truly alive. Ergo, I will not be guilty of murder if I delete you.
Playing this part of the game just made me think "the development team went to los vegas for inspiration didn't they?"
well I guess not every Japanese went to los vegas before so I guess this zone would be new and other worldly for them I guess.
Nobody’s home….we’re just turning off the lights.
1:38:22 I remember this was when chat started to ask of he needed more bins. lol or if we need to send him bins instead.

Lil JC the face of death – flashback to Heavensward with Thordan staring in abject horror at the lalafel before dying.
I just feel like it’s necessary to remind people: Living Memory can only continue to exist if Sphene murders a bunch of people. I loved this area, its story, and the way it made me feel, but I kept pushing because for every person we met who we knew and loved in LM, there are a thousand other people who don’t deserve to be killed and fed into the machine.
What bugs me is that the game tells you like a dozen times, over multiple expansions, that in this world, what they call "the Soul" is mostly just the animating spark of life, while "the Memory" is what makes you, specifically and uniquely *You*.
But people still either miss or ignore that to say that this area is meaningless and "We're just unplugging Chat GPT" because the Endless are just the Memory component not the Souls.
