Fears of escalation after incident in Kinmen Islands waters off China's coast I DW News

The National People’s Congress in China is being closely followed in Taipei. Tensions between China and Taiwan have spiked in recent weeks due to an incident which took place in the waters surrounding Kinmen β€” a group of Taiwanese-controlled islands just kilometers from the shores of China. In the incident, a Taiwanese coastguard pursuit of a Chinese fishing vessel led to the death of two Chinese fishermen.

China’s coastguard has increased patrols around Kinmen. Taiwanese officials say that is raising the risk of an accident spiralling into conflict. Our correspondent James Chater reports now from Kinmen, Taiwan.

  3. It all depends on whether China want to invade Taiwan and there’s absolutely no way Taiwan can or able to defend itself and even with the help of other nations. Pls don’t try to instigate others to start war in this region where we’re all living in harmony.

  4. Mmm. China’s aggressive naval vessels behavior continue at Taiwan’s Kennan island. This Chinese belligerent behavior is driving a wedge between them & western nations that they desperately need. Alternative manufactures to democratic nations & domestically!

  5. Kinmen island is just 10 kilometers off the coast of Xiamen city, Fujian province.

The 2 killed Chinese fishermen are not from Xiamen, not even from Fujian province, they are from Sichuan, a province thousand miles away. In a word, they are just some poor guys try to push their luck and make some extra money during these cold days of Chinese new year, they are not local. The locals know far better that never go fishing at these waters because it's very easy to accidentally cross the so called "border line" and when they do, Taiwan coast guard ships will hunt them down ruthlessly, their catch and boat will be confiscated and they must pay a ridiculously high amount of fine to get their boat back, if they survived the hunt.

On the contrary, Kinmen fishermen never had this kind of worry, for the sake of peaceful reunion and bigger pictures, for decades, Chinese coast guard simply never show up, untill now.

  6. Once the US can build the chips without Taiwan they are in trouble. Until then the Chinese will wait. The main thing to understand here is that China can't invade Taiwan without turning it into Ukraine, The Chinese are still many years away from being able to sustain a precision air campaign which would be required to degrade and defang the Taiwanese from making the cost to invade too high. Drones and technology will make this possible in the years to come, but Taiwan can also do something crazy like develop nuclear weapons if they are forced into a corner. Taiwan can still do a lot of damage to China via its arsenal of cruise missiles, but it will ultimately end up a numbers game and Taiwan is like Ukraine a long hot war favors China/Russia there is just basic math, and they have more of everything. In the end hopefully, there wi be a peaceful solution and Taiwan and China can reach some type of union status where both countries operate separate but share a common currency, and have a "one China, two systems" arrangement

  7. Kinmen island isnt β€˜closer to China than to Taiwan’; its more like kinmen island is in the middle of Xiamen – a major coastal industrial city of china. If youve been to xiamen, kinmen island’s location is a bit of an eye opener. I had understood there is no real civilian resident presence on kinmen anymore – i thought most civilians on kinmen had been relocated to Taiwan proper and residents only visited intermittently to check on their properties.

Its also worth noting the chinese coastguard is not part of the PLA but is controlled by the local provincial government; which means the chinese coastguard does a lot of dumb things, for dumb reasons, that are often not sanctioned, or ordered, by the Chinese central government. On the chinese side, there are a lot of people doing things at sea that they have not been ordered to do but which they assume are what the people at the top want them to do. Which is a recipe for chaos.
