‘Fastest procurement of a frigate we’ve ever seen’: Defence Minister on announcement

Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles says today’s defence announcement will be the “fastest procurement” of a frigate Australia has “ever seen”.

The new surface fleet strategy will cost $11.1 billion over a decade.

It increases the number of surface combatants from 11 to 26, but the six optionally crewed vessels are yet to be developed.

“This will be the fastest procurement of a frigate of this kind that we will have ever seen, but we’re able to do that because we are looking at buying something that is in service right now,” Mr Marles told Sky News Australia.

“That follows through on the philosophy of the Defence Strategic Review of looking to have minimum viable capability, not getting all the bells and whistles and having things blow out in time and cost, but making sure that we actually get practical, real capability into service as soon as cost.

“That is the philosophy which has underpinned the announcement that we’ve made today.”

  2. So basically 26 surface combating ships majority focused on medium range ASW. Unless they to upgunned the 6 hunter class frigates with 96 cell VLS? What defence posture type of fleet is it suposed to be? The current existing 3 AWDs is put into tire 1. 6 hunter.class and 3 F100 class for a total of 9 ships as what is that ment to mean? A total of 9 AWDs? Whats the role of the hunter.class going to be? If they choose 11 more smaller ships for ASW? Not much of a detailed announcement

  3. Marles may as well say that Australia is buying 50 Frigets! It's a decade away at best…… By that time 11 General Purpose Frigets will be reduced to 6. Labor may not even be in Government in 18 months.

  4. 1. Defence pay is crap
    2. DFRDB is gone
    3. DVA won't support you
    4. Military assets and equipment is decades old
    5. Army Reserves was destroyed in the 90s with Ready Reserves and no chance of ever being promoted
    6. Navy and Airforce doesn’t have direct entry Reserves.
    7. Army Ready Reserves requires weeks/months of block training and workplaces will not allow this much time off. The General Reserves in the 80s and 90s was 2 weeks.
    8. After 16 years in Defence Reserves and Permanent Navy i was given a TAFE Certificate IV in Leadership.

I spent 5 years in Army Reserves prior to Ready Reserves and had advanced training in Artillery Signals, OPCP field calling in fire missions, fired the Howitzer Guns, Infantry Training and advanced medical training in a hospital. Ready Reserves offers none of this and twice the commitment
