Fast & Easy Broken Hammer Repair and Restoration

In this week’s restoration video, I repair an old hammer that used to belong to the grandfather of a friend of mine. The handle had broken right at the head and needed to be reattached. I used as much of the old handle as I could and although we lost a few inches of length, it turned out very well and should last many years.

I started by removing the broken pieces of handle from the eye of the head of the hammer followed by scraping and sanding the remainder of the handle. I filled the grain with wood filler, sanded, and used a light stain to color the filler. I then turned to the head of the tool which I cleaned, polished, and blued to create a beautiful hammer head. I left two imperfections that may have been added by my friend’s grandfather just to leave his mark and keep it unique.

I shaped the handle to accept the head, fabricated a new wedge from an old piece of the handle, and fitted everything together. After a final polish, I treated the handle with boiled linseed oil and gave it a test on some nails in an old board.

  1. I'm watching this thinking I could restore my dad's hammer that has broken at the same spot as it's all I have left of him now….I've absolutely no chance seeing the tools and standard of work you have done here. Really lovely work though but mine will have to remain broken as I'd never do it justice

  2. The end result looks incredible! Never thought about it until watching this, but I wonder why the head of a hammer is attached this way with wedges, rather than with a pin or screw through the side of it like a shovel…

  3. I fixed an old Lasher hammer the same way a few years ago, outside of using the epoxy. The metal wedges make a huge difference and it's been holding up to a lot of use since. Awesome restoration 🙂

  4. 今回の金槌の修復も、お見事です。お店で売っている金槌よりもピカピカですね。この作業は、趣味でやってるのですか?それともお仕事ですか?

  5. Thanks for visiting my channel. I apologize for the random sounds (including my breathing I think, very annoying to me) and the crazy auto focus. This is the first time using my new camera (Canon R10) and I need to work on optimizing the set up. I hope you enjoy this quick project I did for a friend of mine. Please leave me a comment sharing your thoughts about it and if you would like to see another project of mine, click here –> https://youtu.be/hpYLDRt6fY0. Thanks again and see you in the next one!

  6. А как называется станок на котором можно крутить рукоятку для молотка? И сделайте, пожалуйста, отдельное видео своих инструментов. И расскажите для чего они
