Wizards and Warriors starts a new animated fantasy documentary lore video series on the world of Dragon Age. In the waning years of the Blessed Age, reptilian wings blanketed the sun. Dragons, thought to have been hunted to extinction centuries earlier, reappeared in the skies above the world of men and devastated the countryside of Orlais and Nevarra. Reading this as an epochal omen, Faustine II, Divine of the Chantry, declared a new age: the Dragon Age, which in her holy wisdom, she predicted would be a time of violence, upheaval, and dramatic change. Thus begins the period in which the titularly named Dragon Age games take place, yet this is not where the history of its world begins. Welcome to our first video on the vibrant and tumultuous continent of Thedas, where we will explore the immortal hubris of ancient Elvhenan, and the rise of the Blood Mages of Tevinter.

  1. As cool as this video is (along with all the others on this channel) I do need to point out that the approach to Thedas’ history here is a little strange. What makes the world of Dragon Age so cool isn’t just the deep lore, but the way it’s presented is shockingly realistic. The games tell the world history from the perspective of what the inhabitants of the world know, not what is actually true. It’s this sort of “societal forgetfulness” over the ages that lends itself to the creation of such a rich world. It invites the listener to try and derive fact from fiction, just as we do in our world.
With that in mind, presenting the actual events in a linear history-like format while using information that was privately shared between 2 people is a strange way to present this world; it kind of undercuts it. For example, what makes our history really cool relies on the information we do know being our best guess, especially in times with little to no written records. Thedas is just as good at forgetting information as we are (if not better at it).

All this is a long-winded way to suggest making a Dragon Age video that focuses on how the people view the world, instead of the actual unbiased history. It’s still important to separate world building from the story that has yet to be concluded.

  2. The history of Dragon Age begins with what is basically the Fall of Troy, with Elvhenan being Troy and Tevinter being the Roman and Byzantine analog as they at present control only a fraction of the territory they once held at their peak.
