I'd always heard that the Thousand Cuts was done using a fishing/trappers net too. Wrapped tight, the executioner would slice the flesh that poked through the netting, and once done the netting would be pulled away quickly leaving the blood to rush back and the remaining skin to essentially explode in a shower of blood.
