Fantastic show, Andrew, Simon & Brad 🙂
Something to mention (apologies if it was and I missed it) – if I recall correctly, the songs which appeared on the LP and the review CD are all different versions.
The LP was the only Clapton album I was disappointed with – only six songs, the sound was awful and I didn’t like “Pearly Queen”, which I think was included just to encourage Traffic fans to buy the album. It wasn’t mixed properly; as Eric didn’t turn up, Glyn Johns walked away from the task … The CD is a much better listen and is a great record (!) of the event.
Although the concert was all about Eric, Ronnie Wood’s playing made him the secret star of the show, imho – I wish he had done more live work with Eric. The two seemed to have such a natural affinity when they duet.
Although it wasn’t filmed, I think there’s something very ‘visual’ about this album – partly due to the photos which we’ve seen but I think also because of the between-songs chatter – you can picture Pattie and Clapton’s contemporaries sitting in the audience …
Watching on replay – Great discussion – so wish this had been filmed! what a document that would be ! The expanded cd is a different proposition to the original album. the original release did not do justice to the occasion! My first band we played After Midnight mid 70’s at school dances and other gigs
I waited on Steve Winwood in Nashville at a restaurant called Sperry's. Sperry's was in the ritzy part of town called Belle Meade where all of the old, southern mansions were, where all of the old money was. Sperry's had been and still is an old fashioned steak house with the first salad bar in Nashville. I have friends who still work there. Everything is a la carte and it ain't cheap! We made lots of tips! But the food is amazing…steak, lobster, etc. I have a great table side, banana's foster, I almost caught the place on fire story, but I'll save that for another time. 🔥Sperry's is where a lot of the "stars" would come for dinner. No one was ever to "germy" and kind of left people to enjoy their dinner. We were not allowed to ask for autographs but the meal receipts had 3 copies with signatures, so guess who would steal one of the copies? Yep, me, the rebel! 🤣I could've gotten in so much trouble because their credit card number was on there, but I would never show that to anyone. It was my own personal autograph stash. There were a couple of times I broke the rules, twice with John Prine and Maura O'Connel, but those were both gifts for friends. Of course, I kept a copy though. Steve Winwood was very nice. I remember it was just kind of a chill, relaxing dinner for him and whomever he was with. I can't recall who his dinner partner was. I'm left withthe impression it was a woman but can't be sure. But it was cool that he was in Nashville, Country Music USA. He was kind of out of place, you know? Anyway, I was reminded of this experience by listening to the live performance of the Rainbow concert. Sorry for the long diatribe. Just wanted to share. 🎸🎹 🎤🎶
