  1. The notion that psychosis cause a witch scare is a fiction aimed at protecting the reputation of the magistrate that made it up in order take legal possession of the land owned by the families of the executed.

  2. Hello Simon: This was really interesting. For severe migraine headaches I used to take a prescription drug called "Cafergot". The two active ingredients are caffeine and ergotamine. Have a lovely day.

  3. I'm with Dr Mikki (Michelle) Brock PhD on this, I believe it's a confluence of events, based in politics & the puritan beliefs of the time. I wrote an essay on this for my finals 20+ years ago. I still hold to the same ideas today, as much as I believe in historical witchcraft, it just wasn't there in Salem. For me it was young girls caught being young girls, possibly attention seeking, it getting out of hand, then the 'hysteria' was really that of political posturing between the staunch purtians, and the progressives, stirred by the rallying of the Minister Samuel P. It's just a cauldron of badness that broke the town. The Crucible is still an amazing play & 10 / 10 recommend for the nuances it has around the story of what happened.

  4. One of my ancestors denounced his grandson-in-law. The grandson-in-law was hung. Iโ€™ve read the trial transcript. If I understood the 17th century English correctly, the accused was physically abusing his wife, the granddaughter. He may also have been a habitual drunkard. Contemporary mores, based on a literal interpretation of the New Testamentโ€™s condemnation and prohibition of divorce, meant divorce wasnโ€™t an option for escaping an unhappy or abusive marriage unless one of the parties was a convicted adulterer. My personal conclusion is my ancestor used the trials as a means to rid his granddaughter of an abusive husband.

  5. I lived in Salem village. Itโ€™s called Danvers now. Also located there was one of the worst mental hospitals in the country that people say was haunted until torn down years ago. Thereโ€™s now a drug detox and some other medical buildings on site that people still report activity.

  6. No. The witch hunts were widespread in Europe, not localized just in Salem. Christians tortured and m-d 14 MILLION mostly women in one of their convenient satanic panic episodes. Sort of like now in 2024.
