Episode 9 – Digging my way out

Trying to forge onward in the face of adversity. Preparing the top for glue up to the body, and some fretwork.

  1. Just a thought, maybe some dowels or a held rear fence would really aid your shooting board technique. In technical terms, you need to be working off two datums. Love seeing you try something new to you. Good going Unit!

  2. One thing that might help would be if the shooting board were longer. As it as long as the boards you are trying to edge your plane hanging off the edge making it difficult to get the cut started. I know you are limited on space but if the shooting board were even 4" longer it would help. You will get there just having to struggle in the journey.Don't bee too down on yourself. nobody is real good the first time they do something.

  3. At our levels of skills, tools, and experience my friend it is not so much the end result as it is the journey getting there. If we arrive late we have still arrived and completed our journeys. Watching you shoot that made me realize just how big you are. I think part of your struggle is that table is wayyyyyyy too low for your body type mate. I watched Ben shoot book matched tops and his forearm rests completely on the plane. Where it looked more like you were trying to do it all with your wrist. Try raising your work surface at least 6 inches maybe more. For everything not just shooting. First and foremost it will save you having back issues from poor leverage and being at bad angles repeatedly.

  4. At least you should have a pretty good looking quilted top on the guitar once you have it glued on. you will either need to glue on a piece of wood to the bottom of the neck heel or a shim of some kind to make up the difference adding the top will add. That or plane the body down the thickness of the top before gluing on the top.

  5. Next time before you start leveling the frets if you have some that are noticeably higher you might give them a tape or two with the hammer just to make sure they are a low as they can be. It might save you from having to sand them down so much. Also did you see the video of Ben doing fret work where he talked about doing what he calls fall away on the last few frets closest to the heal of the guitar to help insure the are a tiny bit lower about 2 to 3 layers of tape worth lower to insure they don't buzz? You are doing okay for a first scratch build. Hang in there.

  7. Bet you won't make that mistake again when gluing
You don't need to use just grease proof paper, you can use clingfilm or saran wrap or whatever it's called over there.
Also parcel tape (the brown stuff used for wrapping) will also do the same job 👍
