Elon Musk has stated that handing over some control of the island to Beijing could alleviate tensions between China and Taiwan. This comes just days after he proposed a peace treaty between Russia and Ukraine.
βMy recommendationβ¦ would be to figure out a special administrative zone for Taiwan that is reasonably palatable, probably wonβt make everyone happy,β Musk said in an interview with the Financial Times. It should be noted that Muskβs electric car company, Tesla, has a sizable factory in Shanghai, China.
Invoking the 2019-20 Hong Kong protests that rocked the city and special administrative region of China, Musk remarked, βAnd itβs possible, and I think probably, in fact, that they might reach an arrangement thatβs more lenient than Hong Kongβ.
Taiwan-China tensions are ongoing, with Taiwanβs government strongly opposing Chinaβs sovereignty claims and claiming that only the islandβs 23 million people can decide its future. Meanwhile, Beijing, who asserts that Taiwan is their democratically ruled region, has also vowed to include Taiwan back into Chinese territory.
China has offered Taiwan a βone country, two systemsβ model of autonomy similar to that of Hong Kong, but it has been rejected by all mainstream political parties in Taiwan and has no public support, particularly after Beijing imposed a tough National Security Law in the city in 2020.
