The Starship system is a fully reusable, two‑stage‑to‑orbit super heavy‑lift launch vehicle under development by SpaceX. The system is composed of a booster stage named Super Heavy and a second stage, also called “Starship”

A "Catch Tower" makes perfect sense, would be minimal catch only, probably 99 percent of the necessary parts are at star base now, go SpaceX!
Every booster that is expended in "simulated" landings in the Gulf of Mexico costs $100 million. It is definitely worthwhile to catch it as soon as possible. Once the Starship re-enters successfully, it is time for it to do the same. The US Navy has units in the Indian Ocean, but they are pre-occupied with the Middle East. Pirates are improbable, because a single US P-8 patrol plane could sink everything.
The subject Star Ship is outdated as we speak, scuttle it!
In Eric Berger’s excellent book Liftoff, there’s a story about SpaceX crews going out to a predetermined location in the Pacific where they expected the Falcon 1 booster to come down after launching from Kwajalein – they were hoping to have it soft splash using a parachute. There they were out in the middle of absolutely nowhere and along comes a Chinese “fishing vessel” that just happened to be there. I’m sure it was just a coincidence. I also expect another coincidental and totally innocent Chinese fishing boat to show up in the Indian Ocean during IFT-4.
I believe it has already been said that the ship will have a hard landing and break up and that the booster will be destroyed in the Gulf of Mexico if memory serves
Woop woop Somalian space pirates😂
I've advocated for a catch-only tower for some time. What I'd like to see for IFT-4 is to synchronize Mechazilla's catch arms with the virtual catch tower software to emulate a catch.
Pirates of the Caribbean sequel- pirates of the Indian ocean 😊
Every time I hit the subscribe bell i get unsubscribed, so I'm not going to do that anymore!😊🤪🙃
Barrrrge, matey
Whether it is worth the risk depends on how the virtual landing in the ocean goes. As long as the booster slows itself properly so it approaches slowly, the odds of the booster damaging the tower so much that they couldn't fix it by IFT-6 seems minimal.
Claro. Hasta podrían con un submarino, ir a buscar un Raptor.
New hair cut ?.
Its a terrible idea to catch the booster until you have a backup launch tower
That thing will float like a cork. Such a long length and so light. It might draught a meter? Empty it’s 200t ? It’s going to look crazy
The ship will come thru the atmosphere hot and it won't be able to slow down, so it will hit the water hard and break up.
They should’ve just put landing legs on them and be done with it! He risks loosing too much if the booster/ship blows up! I don’t see it working every time, it’s a crapshoot. I’d love to see it work but I just can’t say it will. We’ll find out soon
I believe a counter-weight is needed on those towers…
It just occurred to me that they have no room at Starbase to store all those starships they plan to produce there. They must be planning to launch them at Starbase and then land them someplace else for storage or they must be planning to ship them maybe even in modules. They don't have room for storage at Starbase. That is a fact I think we can all agree on.
I'd try to keep it afloat as long as possible to get as much external visual data from booster possible then sink it.
Lov the show🤜🏽✌🏽❤
The recent animation they released shows booster coming in at an angle as opposed to mostly straight down, presumably allowing for a last moment divert into the Gulf. Of course something could go wrong when the catch is being made so it would still be putting the tower at risk.
😊👍🚀💯
The orbital launch pad will be taken down and rebuilt . The second pad will be modified and built incorporating what they learned from the first pad. When they build the one at the cape that will be closer to the final design.
It will land where it took off. The tower is already being modified to catch it. Not really a risk as they will build an updated second tower . And rebuild the first one anyway.
If they can land on a virtual tower a few times, then they will be in a position to try it. They are still far away from that. It seems like people forgot how IFT3 went..
