After not talking to edgar after delivering the letter and finishing the boss, I thought Edgar killed Irina because Edgar isn't there and there's only her corpse. Much less horrible than I thought. I thought I killed the girl by leading her murderer to her.
If you kill Edgar you get a +8 Banished Knight's Halberd Worth!
He laters invades you on Revengers Shack, due to Elden Ring wiki

Not sure why, but no matter what I do even after beating the boss Edgar says he has to stay in the castle to do his duty. What am I missing?

I already killed the boss before talking to him. Then I found the girl and gave him the letter. Went back, shes dead, went back to edgar and he said he needs to defend the castle still. I dont know what to do now.

My current theory of the continuation of this quest line is that it has to do with hunting down the harpy creatures and wherever their main operation is because the weapon lying beside Irina is one of theirs
If you complete this questline, a npc named Hyetta will spawn next to the "Lake facing cliffs" site of grace and you can start her questline
Edgar returns as an invader at the Revenger's Shack west of Ria Lucaria. I'm not sure if his body can be found afterwards
